Face Like Flint: God’s Call, Your Responsibility, and the Power of Obedience

Isaiah 50:1–2, 7 (NIV)
“This is what the Lord says: ‘Where is your mother’s certificate of divorce with which I sent her away? Or to which of my creditors did I sell you? Because of your sins you were sold; because of your transgressions your mother was sent away… Was my arm too short to deliver you? Do I lack the strength to rescue you?’ … ‘Because the Sovereign Lord helps me, I will not be disgraced. Therefore have I set my face like flint, and I know I will not be put to shame.’

Christian man, God’s call is clear—and your response matters.

From the beginning, there’s been a holy tension: God’s sovereignty and man’s responsibility. You were created to work, to lead, and to build—but never apart from the God who formed you. He doesn’t need you—but He wants you. He made you to walk with Him, to serve alongside Him, and to glorify Him in everything you do.

But what happens when we drift?

We start believing the lie: “I’ve got this. I’m in control.”
And yet—we can’t cure the common cold.
We can’t stop a storm.
We can’t even guarantee our next breath.

God calls this spiritual adultery—when we live like He’s not there, like He doesn’t matter. He rebukes His people in Isaiah: “Was My arm too short to deliver you?” No. He’s still mighty. Still able. Still calling. But are you listening?

You have gifts. Skills. Opportunities. But none of it was meant to be used apart from Him. Working without God offends Him. But so does doing nothing—burying your talents, making excuses, avoiding responsibility.

Laziness isn’t humility. It’s rebellion.

God is calling men who will set their faces like flint—resolute, disciplined, faithful. He wants partners in His mission. Not perfect men. Just surrendered ones.

You were made to build God’s Kingdom. Your job, your home, your influence—it’s all part of your assignment. Your obedience today echoes into eternity. And only what was done with Him and for Him will stand forever.

Bottom Line:

God doesn’t want your excuses. He wants your allegiance. Responsibility starts with obedience—and obedience starts with a man who sets his face like flint.
