John 8:29, 31-34, 44, 47 (NIV) “The one who sent me is with me; he has not left me alone, for I always do what pleases him.”
“If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
“Very truly I tell you, everyone who sins is a slave to sin… You belong to your father, the devil… Whoever belongs to God hears what God says. The reason you do not hear is that you do not belong to God.”
Belief Is Not Enough
Jesus separates believers from disciples. Many men today claim faith, but few follow the narrow, difficult road of obedience that leads to life. Believers may nod in agreement that Jesus came from God and lived a good life, but they stop short of submitting every part of their own life to His commands.
False Confidence
Believers often lean on history or heritage—“I grew up in church,” “I was baptized years ago,” “I’m a good person.” Yet Jesus warns that mere lineage or lip service does not make a man right with God. Those who only believe without obeying remain enslaved to sin and, in Jesus’ own words, belong to the devil.
The Mark of a Disciple
A true disciple is born again by the Spirit and seeks daily to do what pleases the Father (v.29). He searches Scripture not for information but for transformation—aligning heart, mind, and actions to God’s revealed truth. He rejects old assumptions about God, men, and morality, gladly replacing them with the Word that sanctifies.
