Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength. These words that I am giving you today are to be in your heart. Repeat them to your children. Talk about them when you sit in your house and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Bind them as a sign on your hand and let them be a symbol on your forehead. Write them on the doorposts of your house and on your city gates.” Deuteronomy 6:5-9 CSB https://bible.com/bible/1713/deu.6.5-9.CSB
These verses are the simple remedy for restoring America and the church of Jesus Christ to the righteousness that pleases God. We have failed to obey these words and so have lost our families, churches, and society to spiritual chaos, rot, confusion, and denial. We must not think the Old Testament is irrelevant to our lives because we live under the New Covenant. God’s word is useful for our instruction, and the Old Testament is the word God used to reveal Himself, from which the New Testament was developed. The simple remedy described in these verses is as follows:
- Love God first and foremost. Make Him and His will our highest priority and desire.
- Make God’s Word our food as Jesus did. We must read the Scripture daily and study it with God’s people regularly. We must attend churches that make the teaching and obedience of God’s word its chief purpose.
- We must disciple our children. We must systematically teach them God’s word and allow them to apply it. This is not the church nor the Christian school’s primary responsibility but the Christian father’s in collaboration with the Christian mother to train up their children in the way they should go.
- Make Christ obvious to our neighbor and community. Through speech, conduct, and even signs, we are to identify with Jesus so that people will know we are His and can approach us for receiving Him as their Savior as they experience the goodness of our lives and wisdom.
- Insist our city, state, and national leaders pass laws and make no new laws that conflict with God’s word. Our city gates are our responsibility to ensure compliance with God’s will so that all of us can live in peace with God because we conform to His will. As leaders in business, the marketplace, the educational institution, and wherever we work and live, we are to promote obedience to Jesus Christ and resist those who would promote otherwise.
These are the things Christians must engage in, even as our founding faith-filled fathers made homes, churches, and society godly and good. If we will return to a more God-centered people, we must do what our God commands, remembering that He has told us what is good and what we must do to please Him.
