51% Is Not Repentance: Why God Calls Men to Come All the Way Back

(Jer) 3:12-15 CJB “Go and proclaim these words toward the north: ‘“Return, backsliding Isra’el,” says Adonai. “I will not frown on you, for I am merciful,” says Adonai. “I will not bear a grudge forever. Only acknowledge your guilt, that you have committed crimes against Adonai your God, that you were promiscuous with strangers under every green tree, and that you have not paid attention to my voice,” says Adonai. “Return, backsliding children,” says Adonai; “for I am your master. I will take you, one from a city, two from a family, and bring you to Tziyon. I will give you shepherds after my own heart, and they will feed you with knowledge and understanding.”

51% Is Not Enough

Many people hope that when they die, God will look at their life and say, “You were good enough. Welcome home.”

They assume heaven works on a percentage scale.

“If I was mostly good…
If I didn’t break too many commandments…
If I tried my best…
If I was better than most…”

Then surely, God will accept me.

Recently, this thinking became personal for me. My half-brother was diagnosed with cancer. He shared his hope that he has lived well enough to join his mother and brother in heaven. Like many, he has walked the wide road that leads to destruction. Like many, he is hoping that 51% goodness will be enough.

But Scripture tells us something very different.

Through the prophet Jeremiah, God speaks to a rebellious and wandering people:

“Return, backsliding Isra’el… I am merciful… Only acknowledge your guilt… Return, backsliding children… for I am your master… I will give you shepherds after my own heart.”
(Jeremiah 3:12–15, CJB)

Notice what God does not say.

He does not say, “Try harder.”
He does not say, “Do better next time.”
He does not say, “Get your life to 51%.”

He says, “Return.”

Repent.

Come back.

Acknowledge your guilt.

Submit to Me as your Master.

God’s mercy is real. His patience is deep. His desire to forgive is sincere. But His mercy is received through repentance, not self-improvement.

The Bible teaches that every one of us is born separated from God.

We are ignorant of His ways.
Rebellious toward His commands.
Committed to doing what is right in our own eyes.

We naturally resist God’s authority. We ignore His Word. We live for ourselves. We refuse to acknowledge Jesus Christ as Lord.

This is not a “mistake problem.”
It is a “sin problem.”

And sin cannot be solved by being “mostly good.”

God says, “Only acknowledge your guilt.”

True repentance is not:

“I’m sorry if I hurt anyone.”
“I regret some bad choices.”
“I wish I had done better.”

Biblical repentance is:

“I have sinned against God.”
“I have lived my own way.”
“I have disobeyed His voice.”
“I need mercy through Christ.”

It is a turning of the heart, mind, and direction of life.

Repentance means leaving the wide road and entering the narrow way that leads to life.

God’s mercy is not disconnected from justice.

He pardons sinners because Jesus paid for sin.

Jesus lived in perfect obedience.
Jesus fulfilled every word of God.
Jesus died for our sins.
Jesus rose from the dead.
Jesus will judge the living and the dead.

Those who repent and come to Christ are reconciled to God.

Not by works.
Not by percentages.
Not by religious activity.

By grace through faith that leads to obedience.

Jeremiah says God gives repentant people “shepherds after My own heart” who feed them with knowledge and understanding.

In other words, true repentance produces discipleship.

Those who belong to Christ:

Pursue God.
Love His Word.
Submit to biblical teaching.
Walk with God’s people.
Seek to obey Jesus.

Not perfectly.
But sincerely.
Persistently.
Humbly.

The truly repentant man no longer ignores God. He no longer lives in intentional rebellion. He now wants to please God.

Obedience does not save him.

But obedience proves he has been saved.

Scripture teaches that every person will be measured.

Believers in Christ will be rewarded for faithful service.
Unbelievers will be judged by Christ’s perfect standard.

Those who reject Christ will be compared to Christ.

And no one matches His perfection.

That is why salvation apart from Him is impossible.

Only those who have been reconciled through Jesus will stand forgiven.

Brothers, this message matters.

Especially for men who are focused on:

Providing for family.
Building careers.
Managing responsibilities.
Solving problems.

You can succeed in life and fail in eternity.

You can provide well and still perish.

You can be respected on earth and rejected in heaven.

God is not calling you to be 51% good.

He is calling you to come all the way back.

Run Today’s Play: Stop Negotiating with God

Don’t say:
“I’ll get serious later.”
“I’m not that bad.”
“I’ll change someday.”

Later is not promised.

Today, do this:

  1. Confess your sin honestly to God.

  2. Submit to Jesus as Lord, not just Savior.

  3. Open His Word daily.

  4. Commit to biblical fellowship.

  5. Obey what He shows you—immediately.

Men of God do not aim for minimum standards.

They aim for wholehearted obedience.

They don’t ask, “How little can I give God?”

They ask, “How fully can I follow Christ?”
