Build on the Rock: Why Strong Christian Men Choose Obedience Over Approval

Luke 6:22–26, 46–48 NIV Blessed are you when people hate you, when they exclude you and insult you and reject your name as evil, because of the Son of Man. Rejoice in that day and leap for joy, because great is your reward in heaven…
But woe to you who are rich… well fed… who laugh now… when everyone speaks well of you…
“Why do you call me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ and do not do what I say?… They are like a man building a house, who dug down deep and laid the foundation on rock… when the flood came… it could not shake it, because it was well built.”

Christian men everywhere are chasing stability, security, and significance. We invest, plan, build careers, and protect our families. None of that is wrong—but Jesus warns us that the greatest security doesn’t come from what you build on earth, but what you build in eternity.

Most men wouldn’t turn down a company’s 401k match. Why? Because it feels foolish to say no to free money—especially when it multiplies your investment.

But brothers, Jesus offers something infinitely greater.
He promises a multiplied reward—a 10x, 100x, eternal return—when we suffer loss, rejection, insult, or exclusion because we stand publicly with Him.

That kind of reward dwarfs any earthly retirement plan.

Most men spend their lives preparing for twenty years of comfort. Jesus calls us to prepare for an eternity of glory. Scripture promises a new heaven and a new earth—holy, righteous, perfect—where those who loved God and kept His commands will live forever with new bodies free from sin and death.

And the men most honored by God?
Not the wealthy.
Not the popular.
Not the comfortable.

But the men who willingly suffered for Him.

Men who stood for truth when their friends mocked.
Men who gave and served sacrificially while others stored and hoarded.
Men who carried the gospel even when it cost their reputation, their career, or their life.
Men like the prophets—and the martyrs—whose blood still marks the trail Jesus walked first.

The world rewards the loud, the proud, the successful.
Jesus rewards the obedient.

That’s why He asks the most piercing question any Christian man will ever face:
“Why do you call me ‘Lord’ but refuse to do what I say?”

Obedience is the difference between a house that collapses in the flood… and a house that stands unshaken on the rock. Every man’s house will be tested. Every life will face the torrent. Only those who hear and do the Word will stand.

So we have to decide:
Do we want to live well on this earth—or the new earth?
Do we want the approval of men—or the reward of God?

Run Today’s Play: Choose obedience over approval. Build your life on the rock.

  • Expect resistance: If people dislike you because you stand with Jesus, consider it a blessing—not a setback.

  • Live for the new earth: Redirect your time, money, and energy toward what lasts forever.

  • Make Jesus’ words your blueprint: Dig deep. Know His commands. Apply them today—not someday.

  • Stand firm when mocked or rejected: Your reward is not here. It’s coming, and it’s greater than anything earth can offer.

  • Lead with courage in your home and work: Let your loyalty to Jesus be visible, vocal, and unwavering.

Brothers, the flood is coming. Build your life on the rock. Obey the One who sees, remembers, and rewards every sacrifice made for His Name.
