Feelings Are Not Our Friends

“You must have this tassel so that you may look at it and remember all the commandments of the Lord and obey them and so that you do not follow after your own heart and your own eyes that lead you to unfaithfulness. Thus you will remember and obey all my commandments and be holy to your God.” Numbers 15:39-40 NET https://bible.com/bible/107/num.15.39-40.NET

Feelings are not our friends. Like the triune God, He has made us body, soul, and spirit. The body and soul have been corrupted by the sin of our ancestors, creating a rebellious nature within us from birth. This is why children must be trained in the way they should go. The modern psychology that teaches children are born blank slates whose environment shapes their outcome is false. The Bible, God’s Word, which is the ultimate truth, teaches that we are born sinful, explaining why we disobey God and man. We see this truth so clearly in toddlers who have been deeply loved by their parents but are also profoundly selfish. This DNA of rebellion resides in our bodies, corrupting our feelings. Feelings are good; God has made them, but they are corrupted, so they often misinterpret our environment and desire things we should not have. Feeding our unhindered feelings, which our society encourages, leads to our death and destruction, as we see all around us. Obedience to God makes us holy and healthy. Our Owner and Creator has prescribed for us how to live through His written Word so that every generation can please Him, live forever with Him, and live healthy lives on earth. Our will must engage His word to orient our bodies toward His ends. The engine for this behavior is His Spirit, Who enlivens our spirit when we have been born again. Our fuel for healthy and holy living is God’s word, empowered by God’s Spirit, decided upon by our will to lead our bodies to do what is good and pleasing to God regardless of our feelings.
