Jesus’ Return Is, In Part, Dependent Upon Us

The Lord is not slow about His promise, as some consider slowness, but is patient toward you, not willing for any to perish but for all to come to repentance. But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, in which the heavens will pass away with a roar and the elements will be destroyed with intense heat, and the earth and its works will be found out. Since all these things are to be destroyed in this way, what sort of people ought you to be in holy conduct and godliness, looking for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens burning will be destroyed, and the elements will melt with intense heat! But according to His promise we are looking for new heavens and a new earth, in which righteousness dwells.”  2 Peter 3:9-13 LSB https://bible.com/bible/3345/2pe.3.9-13.LSB

Many Christians believe the Lord is coming soon. Many more hope that is true and wonder at His delay. The Lord delays His return so that more people can be saved. When He appears again to establish His eternal kingdom, there will be no more opportunity for men to be saved, nor will any more people be born. This then explains His delay. The Lord God Almighty takes no delight in the death of any person but seeks for all people to be reconciled to Him through Jesus the Savior of the world. The Christians who genuinely want His return soon can work to hasten that return by leading people to Jesus. The delay of the Lord is caused by the vast numbers of people still separated from Him by disobedience to Him. The Christian who seeks the Lord’s return will work to hasten His return by sharing the gospel more and more to ever broader audiences of people yet unreconciled to God. Beginning in our households, the Christian who desires to see Jesus should be working earnestly to share Jesus with everyone he knows and loves until all have made peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ and look forward with us to the new heavens and the new earth where we all live together with God for all eternity. If we want to see Jesus come back soon, we will work with all diligence to see all men saved.
