Living Water and Real Purpose: Why Men Find Satisfaction in the Mission of Jesus

(Jhn) 4:10, 14, 31-32, 34-35, 41 CJB “Yeshua answered her, “If you knew God’s gift, that is, who it is saying to you, ‘Give me a drink of water,’ then you would have asked him; and he would have given you living water.” but whoever drinks the water I will give him will never be thirsty again! On the contrary, the water I give him will become a spring of water inside him, welling up into eternal life!” Meanwhile, the talmidim were urging Yeshua, “Rabbi, eat something.” But he answered, “I have food to eat that you don’t know about.” Yeshua said to them, “My food is to do what the one who sent me wants and to bring his work to completion. Don’t you have a saying, ‘Four more months and then the harvest’? Well, what I say to you is: open your eyes and look at the fields! They’re already ripe for harvest! and many more came to trust because of what he said.”

The woman at the well came to draw water, but what she really needed was life.

Her life was marked by shame, loneliness, and regret. She had searched for fulfillment in relationships that could never satisfy her soul. Like so many people today, she kept trying to quench a spiritual thirst with things that could never truly satisfy.

But Jesus offered her something entirely different.

He offered living water.

Jesus explained that whoever drinks the water He gives will never thirst again because it becomes “a spring… welling up into eternal life.” In other words, Jesus Himself is the source of life, forgiveness, and reconciliation with God. Only He can restore what sin has broken.

The woman wasn’t the only one thirsty. Her entire town was spiritually dry, waiting and hoping for the Messiah. When Jesus revealed Himself, many came to believe in Him and receive the life only He could give.

But the story also reveals something remarkable about Jesus.

While His disciples were focused on physical food, Jesus said, I have food to eat that you don’t know about.”

Then He explained:

My food is to do what the one who sent me wants and to bring his work to completion.”

Jesus was satisfied by accomplishing the mission of His Father. Doing God’s will nourished Him more deeply than physical food. Bringing people to faith in God was not merely a task—it was His joy and fulfillment.

This reveals something important about the human condition.

Every person on earth is searching for life, meaning, and satisfaction. We see it everywhere. People pursue success, relationships, possessions, pleasure, or status hoping those things will fill the emptiness inside.

But the thirst remains.

Why? Because we were created for God.

Our deepest need is not simply happiness, comfort, or success. Our deepest need is reconciliation with God through Jesus and participation in His mission.

When a person encounters Christ and receives eternal life, they experience restoration with God. But something else happens as well: they discover a purpose larger than themselves.

Jesus tells His disciples to open their eyes and look at the fields—they are ripe for harvest. The world is full of people who are spiritually thirsty.

When believers engage that need by sharing the words of Jesus and pointing people to Him, something remarkable happens. Both the one who hears the gospel and the one who shares it experience satisfaction.

The one who believes receives eternal life.
The one who serves experiences the joy of fulfilling God’s purpose.

And in both cases, God receives the glory.

Men today often wrestle with questions of purpose, provision, and priorities. But Scripture reminds us that true purpose is never found in self-absorption. It is found in participating in the work of God.

We need restoration to God.
And we need a reason to live that is greater than ourselves.

Jesus gives us both.

If you feel restless, empty, or unsatisfied, it may be because your life is not centered on the One who alone gives living water—or because you are not yet engaged in the work He has given His people to do.

When we know Christ and join Him in His mission, both our thirst and our hunger begin to be satisfied.

Run Today’s Play:

First, drink deeply from the living water. Spend time with Jesus in His Word and prayer. Remember that your life, forgiveness, and peace with God come from Him alone.

Second, open your eyes to the harvest around you. Someone in your life is spiritually thirsty. A coworker. A neighbor. A friend. Ask God for the courage to speak about Christ and share the hope you have in Him.

Third, align your purpose with God’s mission. When your life centers on helping people know Jesus, you will discover a satisfaction the world cannot give.

The world is thirsty.

Jesus is the living water.

And the fields are ready for harvest.
