“For no one can lay a foundation other than the one which is laid, which is Jesus Christ. Now if anyone builds on the foundation with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, straw, each man’s work will become evident, for the day will indicate it because it is revealed with fire, and the fire itself will test the quality of each man’s work. If any man’s work which he has built on it remains, he will receive a reward. If any man’s work is burned up, he will suffer loss, but he himself will be saved, yet so as through fire.” 1 Corinthians 3:11-15 LSB https://bible.com/bible/3345/1co.3.12-15.LSB
The reward God desires to give to men, the eternal reward for building His kingdom upon the earth as it is in heaven, is based upon the work men do to further the gospel in its breadth and its depth. The focus of our occupation should be on seeing men come to faith and grow deeper in their faith. The purpose of our vocation is to fund this work and to do that work in the context of our vocation. Our big homes and bank accounts will burn in the fire to come and will gain us no reward from God unless we use our homes to invite people to hear and grow more in Christ. Our business success is of no eternal reward unless we use those profits to invest deeply, generously, and lavishly in the things that lead men to come to Christ and grow in Christ. We are not free people to do as we please. We are servants of Christ, purchased by His blood, left here on earth to serve Him by seeking and saving the lost, teaching them to obey everything Jesus commanded. This must become a greater focus of our lives if we are to impact our world for Christ and be rewarded by Christ on that day when we meet Christ face to face.
