2 Timothy 1:7–9 NIV “For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline. So do not be ashamed of the testimony about our Lord or of me his prisoner. Rather, join with me in suffering for the gospel, by the power of God. He has saved us and called us to a holy life—not because of anything we have done but because of his own purpose and grace. This grace was given us in Christ Jesus before the beginning of time.”
Paul gives men a clear picture of the Spirit-filled life. Every Christian man is meant to be filled with the Holy Spirit—He is the guarantee that we truly belong to Christ. Without the Spirit, we are not adopted sons, we do not belong to Jesus, and we have no hope of eternal life.
So what does a Spirit-filled man look like?
First, a Spirit-Filled Man Is Unashamed of Jesus
The Spirit does not produce fear. He produces power, love, and self-discipline. A man filled with the Spirit publicly and joyfully identifies with Jesus as Savior and Lord.
This is essential for the Great Commission.
We are left on earth—not to coast, build comfort, or chase career—but to build Christ’s kingdom:
-
Seeking the lost
-
Sharing the gospel
-
Teaching obedience to everything Jesus commands
If this mission does not shape our purpose, schedule, and conversations, then we must seriously examine whether the Spirit is truly at work in us.
Spirit-filled men expect pushback.
Some suffer the irritation and rejection of family and friends who refuse to be told they must be born again. Others—especially in Asia, Africa, and the Middle East—suffer loss of property, imprisonment, or death.
Suffering for Christ is not a sign of failure; it is evidence of faithfulness.
Second, the Spirit moves every true Christian toward holiness.
Holy living means living like Jesus—His character, His obedience, His purity, His courage, His compassion, His submission to the Father’s will. The Spirit always leads men toward Jesus, not away from Him.
The Word of God is the Spirit’s true North.
Where the Spirit is active, the Word is obeyed.
Where the Spirit is present, sin is resisted.
Where the Spirit indwells, fruit grows.
A Spirit-filled life is not perfection—but it is unmistakable transformation.
Do we boldly share Christ?
Do we live like Christ?
Do we see fruit—courage, obedience, holiness, mission?
If yes, thank God. Keep going.
If no, repent. Seek God. Ask Him to fill you with His Spirit and confirm your adoption as His child.
