“I will lay the corpses of the Israelites in front of their idols and scatter your bones around your altars. Wherever you live the cities will be in ruins and the high places will be desolate, so that your altars will lie in ruins and be desecrated, your idols smashed and obliterated, your shrines cut down, and what you have made wiped out. The slain will fall among you, and you will know that I am the Lord. “Yet I will leave a remnant when you are scattered among the nations, for throughout the countries there will be some of you who will escape the sword. Then your survivors will remember me among the nations where they are taken captive, how I was crushed by their promiscuous hearts that turned away from me and by their eyes that lusted after their idols. They will loathe themselves because of the evil things they did, their detestable actions of every kind. And they will know that I am the Lord; I did not threaten to bring this disaster on them without a reason.” Ezekiel 6:5-10 CSB https://bible.com/bible/1713/ezk.6.5-10.CSB
The Lord, Who is holy, has always loved His creation while requiring His creation to love Him. God proves His love for us by what He does for us, even as we prove our love for Him by what we do in obedience to His will. God creates us, sustains us, redeems us through His sacrifice of Himself in Jesus the Savior, seals us with His Holy Spirit, His presence in us, and promises us eternal life in His kingdom where no more death, sickness, or sorrow exists. We are to love Him most, to love Him first, and to work at helping as many people as possible know God in Jesus and love Him by obeying Him even as we do the same. Failure to love God and obey His commands is fatal. The first time God punished humanity for their rejection of Him was catastrophic, and only eight people survived. The second time God punished humanity for rejecting Him was limited to His people, whose responsibility was to worship Him and make Him known in the world so that all the world would know the One True God and obey His commands. Before ending His promise to those people, He came in Jesus to sacrifice Himself so He could pardon all people who come to Him by faith in Him, believing the work and promise He made for all those who humble themselves under His New Covenant commitment to humanity. Jesus will come again and, like the first judgment, will punish for eternity all those but only those who have rejected Him as God and Lord. All those but only those from all time who have loved Him will be resurrected to live forever with Him in eternal life and peace. We have no reason to believe God will not punish and reward people based on their obedience to Him. He has already proven so twice and promises to do so again. All people will live forever. Like they say in real estate, it’s only a matter of location.
