(2 Ti) 1:7-8 CJB “For God gave us a Spirit who produces not timidity, but power, love and self-discipline. So don’t be ashamed of bearing testimony to our Lord or to me, his prisoner. On the contrary, accept your share in suffering disgrace for the sake of the Good News. God will give you the strength for it,”
One of the greatest hindrances to the spread of the gospel is not lack of opportunity—it is fear of man.
Men hesitate to speak about Jesus because they fear rejection, discomfort, or loss. We often value man’s opinion of us today more than God’s evaluation of us for eternity.
But Scripture puts the choice clearly before us:
Temporary peace with men and eternal loss
or
Temporary suffering with eternal peace with God
The Real Battle: Fear of Man vs. Fear of God
Every man who claims Christ will face this tension.
Do I speak—or stay silent?
Do I identify with Jesus—or protect my reputation?
Jesus never hid who He was, even when it led to opposition and ultimately the cross. And He calls His followers to the same allegiance.
The issue is not personality—it is loyalty.
God Has Already Given You What You Need
The command to be unashamed does not stand alone. It comes with a promise.
God has given us a Spirit of power, love, and self-discipline.
-
Power to overcome fear
-
Love for God and for the lost
-
Discipline to choose obedience over comfort
You are not left to your own strength.
The Spirit of God enables you to choose faithfulness over fear.
Why Men Stay Silent
Fear of rejection.
Fear of awkwardness.
Fear of losing influence or opportunity.
At its core, it is love of self over love of God and others.
But Scripture calls us higher.
When our love for God grows, and our compassion for those who are lost deepens, our fear of man begins to shrink.
How Courage Is Cultivated
Courage is not automatic—it is developed.
God grows boldness in us through:
-
His Word — shaping our thinking around truth
-
Prayer — aligning our hearts with His purposes
-
Community — being strengthened by other faithful believers
As we fix our minds on eternity, the grip of temporary fears loosens.
A Life Oriented Around Eternity
Men often structure their lives around:
-
comfort
-
success
-
security
But the Christian life is oriented around something far greater:
the kingdom of God
When we remember:
-
eternal life is real
-
judgment is certain
-
the gospel is the only hope
…it reshapes our priorities.
We begin to live not for approval, but for faithfulness.
The Mission Cannot Be Ignored
The Great Commission is not optional.
Every Christian is called to:
-
identify with Jesus publicly
-
speak the truth of the gospel
-
endure hardship when necessary
Jesus warned that being ashamed of Him has eternal consequences.
But those who stand with Him—even in suffering—will share in His glory.
Run Today’s Play:
First, identify your fear.
Where are you holding back from speaking about Jesus?
Second, ask God for boldness.
Trust that His Spirit in you is greater than your fear.
Third, take one step of courage today.
Speak about Christ. Share your faith. Identify with Him openly.
Because the question is not whether you will face pressure…
It’s whether you will be ashamed of Jesus
or stand with Him.
And the man who chooses Christ…
chooses life, purpose, and eternal reward.
