What is born from the flesh is flesh, and what is born from the Spirit is spirit. so that everyone who trusts in him may have eternal life. “For God so loved the world that he gave his only and unique Son, so that everyone who trusts in him may have eternal life, instead of being utterly destroyed. Whoever trusts in the Son has eternal life. But whoever disobeys the Son will not see that life but remains subject to God’s wrath.”

Being religious won’t get you into heaven. That may sound harsh, but Jesus made that point to one of the most religious men in Israel. Nicodemus knew Scripture. He respected God. He was a Pharisee and a leader among the Jewish people. Yet Yeshua told him: “Unless a person is born again from above, he cannot see the Kingdom of God.”John 3:3 CJB

Nicodemus didn’t need more religion.

He needed new life.

So do we.

Why Being Religious Won’t Get You Into Heaven

Some religious traditions have placed tremendous emphasis on the “water” in this passage and concluded that baptism itself produces salvation. Christians differ on exactly how “water” should be understood here. Some connect it with baptism, while others see Jesus drawing from Ezekiel 36:25–27, where God promises to cleanse His people and give them a new heart and Spirit.

But Jesus’ central point is unmistakable: we need something only God can do. We must be born from above by the Spirit of God.

Baptism is important. Jesus commanded it (Matthew 28:19). But the physical act of baptism cannot regenerate a sinful heart.

Religion gives us things to do.

Jesus gives us life.

Trust Jesus Alone

John 3 repeatedly tells us how eternal life is received: “Everyone who trusts in him may have eternal life.” John 3:15 CJB

Then comes perhaps the most familiar verse in Scripture: “For God so loved the world that he gave his only and unique Son, so that everyone who trusts in him may have eternal life.” John 3:16 CJB

Being born again begins with abandoning confidence in ourselves and placing our trust in Jesus Christ alone.

Not our religion.

Not our baptism.

Not our good works.

Not our church attendance.

Not our Christian family.

Jesus.

He lived the righteous life we have failed to live. He died as the sacrifice for our sin. He rose from the dead, conquering death. Through faith in Him, we are reconciled to God and receive the righteousness we could never produce ourselves (2 Corinthians 5:21).

Being religious won’t get you into heaven because religion cannot accomplish what Jesus accomplished for us.

Saving Faith Changes Our Allegiance

But trusting Jesus isn’t merely agreeing with facts about Him.

John concludes the chapter with a sobering contrast “Whoever trusts in the Son has eternal life. But whoever disobeys the Son will not see that life but remains subject to God’s wrath.” John 3:36 CJB

Notice the contrast between trusting the Son and disobeying the Son.

Our obedience does not earn our salvation. Paul makes that clear: we are saved by grace through faith, not by our works (Ephesians 2:8–9).

But saving faith produces a new allegiance.

The man who has been born again begins turning from his old rebellion and following Jesus as Lord. Repentance and obedience aren’t payments we make to God for salvation. They are evidence of the new life God has produced within us.

That’s why Christianity is much more than adopting a religion.

It’s reconciliation with God through Jesus Christ that results in a radically different life.

Don’t Settle for Religion

Men, this is too important to assume.

You can attend church and not be born again.

You can be baptized and not be born again.

You can know Bible verses and not be born again.

You can call yourself a Christian and not be born again.

Nicodemus proves that being religious won’t get you into heaven.

Jesus said: “You must be born again.” (John 3:7)

Run Today’s Play

Ask yourself one brutally important question:

What am I trusting to make me right with God?

If your answer ultimately comes back to being a good man, going to church, being baptized, doing Christian things, or trying harder than the next guy, you’re trusting something that cannot save you.

Put your trust in Jesus Christ alone—His perfect life, His sacrificial death, and His victorious resurrection.

Then live like a man who belongs to Him.

Repent where you’re disobeying. Obey what He commands. Follow Him as Lord—not to earn eternal life, but because through faith in Christ, God has given you new life.

Don’t settle for being religious. Be born again.
