Christian Ethics Are Simple

“And may the Lord cause you to increase and overflow with love for one another and for everyone, just as we do for you. May he make your hearts blameless in holiness before our God and Father at the coming of our Lord Jesus with all his saints. Amen.” 1 Thessalonians 3:12-13 CSB https://bible.com/bible/1713/1th.3.13.CSB

The ethics or moral requirements of Christianity are pretty simple, really. They are to love people and obey God, for our obedience to God makes us holy and blameless before Him, keeping us in Christ, whose perfect obedience has already been appropriated to us and is making us holy. God loves everyone and wasn’t pleased that all would be condemned by Him because all rebelled against Him, ignoring Him and disobeying His commands. In love, God came to us to die for us so that He could pardon us and restore us to Himself as sons and daughters. God’s love moves Him toward us continuously in grace and mercy. This love of God demonstrated unconditionally and sacrificially through Jesus the Savior is the same love the children of God must manifest toward others, especially the household of God. Patience, kindness, gentleness, and service should characterize the relationships within the church and, as much as possible, with those outside the church by those who belong to the church. Loving others and obeying God are simple to remember and reasonable for God to require of us. Yet these things are so difficult for us to do when we are controlled by the desires of our flesh enflamed by the false teaching of the culture that promotes a me-first life. We cannot be selfish and love others. We cannot be selfish and obey God. To love well and obey completely, we must be like Jesus, Who gave His life so that others can live. It is in losing our lives that we find them.
