(Jas) 4:4, 7-8 CJB “You unfaithful wives! Don’t you know that loving the world is hating God? Whoever chooses to be the world’s friend makes himself God’s enemy! Therefore, submit to God. Moreover, take a stand against the Adversary, and he will flee from you. Come close to God, and he will come close to you. Clean your hands, sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded people!”
This is covenant language. God is not speaking casually—He is speaking as a Husband to a people who have been unfaithful.
Friendship with the World Is Enmity with God Means Idolatry Is Still Alive
Israel was destroyed because of idolatry. They bowed to carved images. We assume we’re better.
We’re not.
God still calls His people adulterers—not because we bow to statues, but because we bow to self.
Today’s idols are more subtle:
- Comfort over calling
- Success over surrender
- Possessions over purpose
We don’t fall down before idols—we build lives around them.
We pursue houses, cars, status, and security as if they can satisfy the soul. But Jesus warned us clearly: do not store up treasure on earth, but in heaven.
Friendship with the world is enmity with God because it replaces Him with lesser things.
Submit to God: The Only Way Out of Spiritual Adultery
James gives the solution, and it’s direct:
- Submit to God — surrender your will
- Resist the devil — take a stand against deception
- Draw near to God — pursue Him intentionally
- Clean your hands and purify your heart — deal with sin at the root
This is not passive Christianity. This is war.
Double-minded men want both—God and the world. But God demands allegiance. Not partial. Not seasonal. Total.
Live for the Kingdom, Not the World
Godly men don’t measure life the way the world does.
We are not here to:
- Accumulate comfort
- Build our name
- Chase temporary pleasure
We are here to advance His Kingdom.
That means:
- Pursuing the lost so they may be found
- Strengthening the weak so they may stand
- Healing the broken through truth and love
- Feeding the hungry—physically and spiritually
- Proclaiming freedom to those in bondage
This world is not our home. We are ambassadors of another Kingdom.
Eternal Perspective Produces Earthly Faithfulness
Jesus will return. His Kingdom will be established fully. And He will reward His servants.
The question is not: Did you succeed in the world?
The question is: Were you faithful to the King?
Friendship with the world is enmity with God, but allegiance to Christ leads to eternal reward.
Our loyalty is proven by what we pursue.
Run Today’s Play
Identify one area where you are choosing the world over God
Is it comfort? Money? Approval? Control?
Submit it fully to God today
Not tomorrow. Not gradually. Today.
Replace that pursuit with Kingdom action
- Share your faith with one person
- Serve someone in need
- Spend intentional time with God in His Word
- Lead your family spiritually
Take a stand
Don’t manage sin—resist it.
Because neutral is not an option.
You are either a friend of the world…
or a servant of the King.
