But see to yourselves; for they will deliver you to the courts, and you will be beaten in the synagogues, and you will stand before governors and kings for My sake, as a witness to them… And what I say to you I say to all, ‘Stay awake!’” Mk 13.9,37
As Jesus, God as man, prepares to be crucified thus ending His earthly ministry as a man, His final words are for His disciples to live as men. God tells us to ‘see to ourselves.’ What does this mean? It means to be diligent in the word of God so that we know the will of God and are faithful to do the work of God. We are to be consistently seeking Him, thinking about how to increase His kingdom upon earth as it is in heaven. We are to be constantly praying, eyes open for answers and opportunities to those prayers, for leading men into and deeper into, the kingdom of God. As Jesus finishes this teaching on the end, beginning with His command for us to see to ourselves, He says stay awake, thus repeating His same command. Our culture is so antithetical to the ways of God today because Christians have not seen to themselves and have fallen asleep reading God’s word, praying God’s will and doing God’s work. We have not been diligent nor consistent in seeking and saving the lost through giving, serving, and sharing the gospel with everyone around us so that they see, feel, and hear the good news and desire for themselves to be reconciled to God. We must repent and do the deeds we did when we first believed. Love God with all of our heart, soul, mind, and strength and our neighbor as ourselves by passionately seeking our God and earnestly seeking our neighbor’s godliness.
