“Now when He was in Jerusalem at the Passover, during the feast, many believed in His name, when they saw His signs which He was doing. But Jesus, on His part, was not entrusting Himself to them, for He knew all men, and because He had no need that anyone bear witness concerning man, for He Himself knew what was in man.” John 2:23-25 LSB https://bible.com/bible/3345/jhn.2.24.LSB
Jesus did not define Himself or the value of His work by people’s opinions because He knew the true heart of men. Jesus, God, came to earth to sacrifice Himself as punishment for all the evil of all men from all time so that all men could be reconciled to God and live with Him forever. His miracles proved that His message about Himself and His work was true. As a result, men believed in Him but also turned against Him in the end because men are fickle. God’s call, His work, and the value He places upon us are not determined by the fruit of that call or labor nor the opinion of men about it or ourselves. The responsibility we each hold is to do the will of God for the pleasure of God and to please God in the world. He has commanded us to love Him and others by building His church on earth as it is in heaven. The fruit of our labor and man’s opinion of it is not God’s means for measuring us. God measures us by our faithfulness to Him and by our obedience to Him. God has chosen us to do the will of God for the glory of God. His call and work are universal for all of us but unique to us in the part we are to play in accomplishing it. Fruitfulness is God’s responsibility, while faithfulness is our responsibility. We are to serve God by doing what He has commanded us to do regardless of the opinion of others. We mustn’t fear men or be held back by the opinion of men to do the work of seeing all men come to faith in Jesus Christ and grow in obedience to everything He has commanded.
