Hosea 6.3 laments, Oh, that we might know the LORD! Let us press on to know Him. He will respond to
us as surely as the arrival of dawn or the coming of rains in early spring.
When we think of God what do we think of? Our experience of Him personally combined with our teaching about Him will determine the thoughts we have about God as well as our behavior toward God.
The word God means, He Who is above all, the One Who is to be revered, honored and obeyed because He is perfect, wonderful and responsible for all that is, was or ever will be. Does that definition of God seem congruent with our thoughts about God or our behavior before God? Most likely not.
God wants to be known because He is just and since He plans to measure each person by His standard He has communicated His standard so that we can pass the final examination. It only makes sense that God would have written down what He requires so that all people in all places for all times can know what He expects of His creation.
Where is that record? The Bible contains the Words of God and records the workings of God so that we are without excuse for knowing Him properly and obeying Him accordingly.
So if there is a God, and He has recorded what He expects from us, and we believe we will encounter Him on that day we pass from this world to the next, why do we ignore God so thoroughly in our lives? Why is it so hard for so many to read the Bible a little every day so that they can know God better and be reminded of what God wants from each of us?
Why are we too busy for God? To say such a thing seems ridiculous. Yet most of us would say we are too busy working, serving, sleeping or playing to have time to give for a God Who appears to require so little from us today.
What if God requires much of us but gives us a lifetime to get it done? What if God requires much of us but waits until this lifetime is over to measure it? What if God requires much of us but treats us like the adults we think we are leaving the consequences of our actions unchecked until we meet Him face to face?
God wants us to know Him now so that we can enjoy Him now. God wants us to know Him now so that we can work with Him now for completing His purposes on earth. God wants us to know Him now so that we can experience how wonderful He is now and look forward to living with Him forever later.
Oh, that we might know the Lord. Let us press on to know Him. He will respond to us, like the arrival of the dawn!
