Living the Christian Life Defined

John 8:11-12, 24, 29, 31-32, 47, 51 NIV records, ““No one, sir,” she said. “Then neither do I condemn you,” Jesus declared. “Go now and leave your life of sin.” When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness but will have the light of life.” I told you that you would die in your sins; if you do not believe that I am he, you will indeed die in your sins.” The one who sent me is with me; he has not left me alone, for I always do what pleases him.” To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” Whoever belongs to God hears what God says. The reason you do not hear is that you do not belong to God.” Very truly I tell you, whoever obeys my word will never see death.”https://bible.com/bible/111/jhn.8.11-51.NIV

These verses from John 8 clarify for us how we are to live, how God expects us to live, and God’s promises to us if we live in obedience to Him. The Scriptures offend our modern sensibilities by declaring we are sinful at birth. The culture works hard to teach us that this is not true, but the Bible is unwavering in its insistence upon our sinful nature, which we see from toddlers and read about daily in the media. God expects us to repent from sin and to sin no more. This is our first movement in obedience to God. We are to recognize our separation from Him because of our rebellion against Him, and we are to ask for His forgiveness and restoration. Restoration begins when we believe in Jesus as our Savior. We believe that He is God, lived a perfect life as a man, died on the cross as a sin offering for all humanity, and rose again as God to judge all humanity by their obedient response to Him. Our obedient response is to believe in His work alone for God’s approval and pardon of us, then do all that Jesus has commanded in the Scriptures just as He obeyed every word from His Father while living His perfect life on earth. Obedience to Jesus is what sets us free from the captivity of sin. Obedience to Jesus separates us from the life of disobedience to God, freeing us from both the penalty of sin and the power of sin in our lives. By obeying Jesus, we are no longer able to disobey Jesus. Living in obedience to Him makes us like Him and moves us closer to Him so that we enjoy fellowship with Him. We hear God in His word, we hear God in our heart through His Spirit for applying that word to our lives, and we prove ourselves His disciples because we are demonstrating our love for God while experiencing freedom in God through our Savior Jesus, the Christ. This relationship we cultivate through obedience results in living forever with Jesus and all those who have also loved Him by obeying His commands.
