1 John 3:5–6, 8–9 (NIV) “But you know that he appeared so that he might take away our sins. And in him is no sin. No one who lives in him keeps on sinning. No one who continues to sin has either seen him or known him. The one who does what is sinful is of the devil, because the devil has been sinning from the beginning….The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the devil’s work. No one who is born of God will continue to sin, because God’s seed remains in them; they cannot go on sinning, because they have been born of God.”
The Real Definition of Sin
Sin is not just murder, theft, or scandal. According to God’s Word, sin is anything He condemns — and anything He commands that we refuse to do. You and I commit it in thought, word, and deed, every single day.
Most men will admit they’re “not perfect,” but few grasp how serious sin is to a holy God. When Jesus walked this earth, He never sinned — ever. He perfectly obeyed God in everything, becoming the only man qualified to offer Himself as a sacrifice for the punishment our sins deserve.
Why Men Cannot Make Peace with Sin
Jesus didn’t come to make sin manageable. He came to destroy it — its penalty, its power, and one day, its presence forever. Scripture says plainly:
-
If you live in ongoing rebellion to God’s commands, you have not seen Him or known Him.
-
If you promote sin — whether sexual immorality, greed, dishonesty, or anything God calls evil — you are doing the devil’s work.
This isn’t about perfection. It’s about direction. A man born of God cannot go on living in sin as a lifestyle. Why? Because God’s seed — His Spirit — is in him.
The Call to Spirit-Empowered Obedience
Men of God fight sin. We don’t excuse it. When we fail, we confess it, seek forgiveness, and get back in the fight — with the help of God’s Spirit and the accountability of God’s people.
This is why you need the Word, the Spirit, and the Church:
-
The Word shows you what God commands and condemns.
-
The Spirit empowers you to obey what you know.
-
The Church keeps you encouraged, accountable, and in the battle.
Living Like Jesus Won
If Jesus has destroyed sin’s penalty in your life, live like it. Stop making peace with what He came to kill. Stop tolerating what nailed Him to the cross. Live as a man already tasting the freedom of the coming Kingdom — because you are a son of the King.
Questions for Men:
-
Where are you currently tolerating sin in your life instead of killing it?
-
Who knows you well enough to call you out when you’re drifting?
-
Does your life say you’re living in Christ — or living in compromise?
