““When you tell these people all these things, they will say to you, ‘Why has the Lord declared all this terrible disaster against us? What is our iniquity? What is our sin that we have committed against the Lord our God?’ Then you will answer them, ‘Because your ancestors abandoned me — this is the Lord’s declaration — and followed other gods, served them, and bowed in worship to them. Indeed, they abandoned me and did not keep my instruction. You did more evil than your ancestors. Look, each one of you was following the stubbornness of his evil heart, not obeying me.” Jeremiah 16:10-12 CSB https://bible.com/bible/1713/jer.16.12.CSB
The animists in the jungles and the Hindus in India are about the only ones who worship multiple gods. Some have combined ancestor/spirit worship with the worship of saints from catholic teaching eons ago in South America. Most of us, however, reject the idea of multiple gods. The idea is illogical because God means One Who is ultimate in power, authority, and control. To have many gods is to have a continuous war for dominance among the gods, which is the very thing the Hindu religious text describes. There is only One God Who made everything, sustains everything, and will judge everyone according to His will. This is why we don’t see this heavenly war but there is another god in our lives, the god of self. Every time we are angry, vengeful, lustful, jealous, and more, we display the love we have for the god we think we are. While we don’t believe we are god in the sense of miracles, we do think we are god in the sense of being first and honored most. We believe we can tell the One True God what He is supposed to be doing, and if He fails, then we are free to do as we please. The True God, Jesus, commands us to come to Him first in repentance, admitting we have disobeyed, ignored and dishonored Him in this world. When we are truly regretful and willing to turn from this rebellious living, He in His grace will pardon us, welcome us, and begin to transform us into children of His Who take on His nature of love, kindness, service, sacrifice, patience, grace and mercy and so much more. Until we acknowledge the One True God and obey His commands, we remain defiant, alienated from Him, and at odds with Him, Who will determine the destiny of our souls because He alone is truly God.
