Reflecting On The Chosen Series

“Jesus continued going around to all the towns and villages, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the good news of the kingdom, and healing every disease and every sickness. When he saw the crowds, he felt compassion for them, because they were distressed and dejected, like sheep without a shepherd. Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest is abundant, but the workers are few. Therefore, pray to the Lord of the harvest to send out workers into his harvest.”” Matthew 9:35-38 CSB https://bible.com/bible/1713/mat.9.35-38.CSB

I have greatly enjoyed the series The Chosen. My family has watched the four seasons, and I have defended its viewing among my friends. However, this latest season has raised concerns for me, for the producers chose to add a story not found in the Bible, resulting in what I consider a misrepresentation of Jesus. The story of Thomas and Ramah and Jesus not choosing to heal her has been controversial. Rightly so, for today’s passage states Jesus healed every disease and sickness of those brought to Him. The word every means specifically all and without exclusion. The purpose of God coming in Jesus was to become our sacrificial Savior, affording us our only opportunity to be reconciled to God and to reveal to us the future kingdom of God where He will reign as King of kings and Lord of lords. Jesus healed everyone because, in His kingdom, everyone is healed forever. Abundance, peace, joy, and life are forever and always present in the Kingdom of God, where the King reigns forever with those who love Him. This world is not His kingdom, though He is King of this world. God has allowed men and demons to rule in this world, and we have done a poor job, which is why there is death, evil, and poverty. The people of God are to work today to reveal the future kingdom by loving people, serving people, and being in right relationship with people until all people recognize the King and long for His appearance and rule even as we do. We will not heal everyone, for we are not the King, but we can see some healed by the power of God. Spiritually, we can participate with God to heal everyone who will respond to the gospel we present to all people for becoming reconciled to God through Jesus, the Savior, and true King.
