2 Chronicles 34:21–23 NIV Go and inquire of the Lord for me and for the remnant in Israel and Judah about what is written in this book that has been found. Great is the Lord’s anger that is poured out on us because those who have gone before us have not kept the word of the Lord; they have not acted in accordance with all that is written in this book.” Hilkiah and those the king had sent with him went to speak to the prophet Huldah, who was the wife of Shallum son of Tokhath, the son of Hasrah, keeper of the wardrobe. She lived in Jerusalem, in the New Quarter. She said to them, “This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: Tell the man who sent you to me…”
When King Josiah heard the Word of God, he was cut to the heart. He realized his fathers had failed to obey God’s commands. They had lived religiously but not righteously. So Josiah did what every godly man must do—he sought the Lord. But not himself, he had others do it for him.
Too many men today call themselves Christian yet depend on others to tell them what God says. They rely on their pastor, their wife, or a spiritual friend to interpret God’s will for them. But that is not the will of God.
God calls you to know Him personally.
To read His Word, obey His commands, and walk with Him daily.
We are all sons and daughters of God. We need no mediator between us and our Father except Christ—the One who shed His blood to bring us near. Depending on others to know God for you is not humility—it’s spiritual laziness. Sometimes it’s even a form of rebellion, a desire to keep living halfway while still feeling safe.
When you depend on others for your understanding of God, you make your own opinion the standard of truth. You do what feels right rather than what God has commanded. But each of us will stand before God one day, not as a group, not as a congregation, but as a man before his Maker, to give an account of what we did with His Word.
Those who lived on borrowed faith—who never pursued God personally—will find themselves spiritually bankrupt. Their work will burn like hay and stubble when tested by the fire of judgment.
Men, your pastor can teach you, but he can’t obey for you. Your wife can pray for you, but she can’t repent for you.
You must seek the Lord for yourself.
Stop outsourcing your walk with God. Open the Book. Read it. Obey it. Seek Him for yourself.
Run today’s play: Be the man who knows God firsthand—not the man who only knows about Him.
