“You adulteresses, do you not know that friendship with the world is hostility toward God? Therefore, whoever wishes to be a friend of the world sets himself as an enemy of God. Or do you think that the Scripture speaks to no purpose: “He jealously desires the Spirit which He has made to dwell in us”? But He gives a greater grace. Therefore it says, “God is opposed to the proud, but gives grace to the humble.” Be subject therefore to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you. Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded. Be miserable and mourn and cry. Let your laughter be turned into mourning and your joy to gloom. Humble yourselves in the presence of the Lord, and He will exalt you.” James 4:4-10 LSB https://bible.com/bible/3345/jas.4.4-10.LSB
For a return of God’s Spirit upon the church in this country to occur, James’s command to the church must first occur. Our friendship with the world, our adultery away from God, has brought us to where we stand today. Our rampant immorality, ignorance of the truth, and loss of identity are the fruit of worldly living. The people of God are to love the Lord their God with all of their heart, soul, mind, and strength. The Lord Jesus Christ is to be our first love and greatest desire. Seeking Him diligently and serving Him passionately is our life purpose. Self-indulgent and self-centered living is the opposite of serving God and doing His will on earth as in heaven. Our current culture should break our hearts. If the sin we see doesn’t cause us to humble ourselves before God because we are part of the problem by failing to live earnestly for God before our children and neighbors, then we still fail to see and embrace the problem. We are commanded to make disciples by teaching obedience to everything Jesus commanded after bringing all men from all nations into faith in Jesus. Our failure to win people to Christ and grow people in Christ, ourselves and our children included, is the cause of our moral decay. The solution is to humble ourselves, repent of our apathy, return to God in His word, prayer, and church and do His will for His glory until He returns in Spirit or body to heal our land.
