“For this reason also, since the day we heard this, we haven’t stopped praying for you. We are asking that you may be filled with the knowledge of his will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding, so that you may walk worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to him: bearing fruit in every good work and growing in the knowledge of God, being strengthened with all power, according to his glorious might, so that you may have great endurance and patience, joyfully giving thanks to the Father, who has enabled you to share in the saints’ inheritance in the light.” Colossians 1:9-12 CSB https://bible.com/bible/1713/col.1.9-12.CSB
What is the purpose of knowing God’s will? Most want to know His will to avoid loss. Primarily, it is a loss of money, so we want to know if we should buy this or that, invest in this or that, take this or that job, etc. We also want to know God’s will to avoid loss of time and avoid painful mistakes like choosing the wrong spouse. These are not the reasons Paul prays for the church to know the will of God. God’s word says we should seek God’s will to know how to please God by living our lives. Knowing God’s will is about doing God’s work and bearing fruit in obedience to the Great Commission, which is the Christian mission. God’s will is that we know Him and His faithfulness to live inside of us to empower us to persevere against those who oppose God and so persecute His people. Persecution increases the Christian’s eternal reward just as Jesus was persecuted, suffered, and died for our sins, then was raised as King of kings and Lord of lords. Knowing God’s will is for God’s glory and the benefit of His kingdom increasing upon earth as it is in heaven, not for our own gain or comfort. Do we really want to know God’s will?
