Family of God Means Obedience: What It Really Means to Belong to Jesus

(Mrk) 3:33-35 CJB “He replied, “Who are my mother and my brothers?” Looking at those seated in a circle around him, he said, “See! Here are my mother and my brothers! Whoever does what God wants is my brother, sister and mother!”

Belonging to the family of God is not about proximity, heritage, or profession—it is about obedience to the will of God.

Family of God Means Obedience to the Father

If we are in God’s family, we are called to be like Jesus—the Firstborn Son.

What does that look like?

  • Loving the Father
  • Obeying His will
  • Serving His purposes

Jesus modeled this perfectly. He lived in complete submission to the Father, setting the standard for every child of God.

This is why family of God means obedience. It is the evidence that we truly belong to Him.

Knowing God’s Will Requires God’s Word

If obedience defines the family of God, then we must ask:

How do we know what God wants?

The answer is clear—through His Word.

We must:

  • Engage Scripture daily
  • Sit under teaching where the Bible is honored
  • Gather with other believers for encouragement and accountability

God’s will is not hidden. It is revealed through His Word and lived out in community.

Living Like Jesus Proves Our Identity

Being born again means being born into the family of God. And the evidence of that new life is a life that reflects Jesus.

We may not perform the same miracles He did, but we will continue His mission:

  • We serve the hurting
  • We share salvation so the spiritually dead find life
  • We confront lies and call people to truth

Serving, sacrificing, and sharing—this is how we live as His family.

This is how family of God means obedience becomes visible in real life.

Why This Matters for Your Life

This truth speaks directly to the core struggles men face:

  • Purpose — You exist to represent the Father and carry out His will
  • Provision — God sustains those who prioritize His mission
  • Priorities — Doing God’s will must come before comfort or convenience

You are not part of God’s family because you say you are.
You are part of God’s family because you live like His Son.

Ask yourself:
If obedience defines God’s family, what does my life say about me?

Family of God means obedience.
And obedience reveals whether we truly belong to Him.
