Living As Disciples of Jesus

“Finally then, brothers, we ask and exhort you in the Lord Jesus, that as you received from us as to how you ought to walk and please God (just as you actually do walk), that you excel still more. 2 For you know what commandments we gave you through the Lord Jesus. ” (1Th. 4:1 LSB) https://accordance.bible/link/read/LSB#1Th._4:1

The work of the Christian is to make disciples while at the same time being a disciple of Jesus. A disciple is a student, Christians are eternal students of God in Jesus the Savior. The purpose of this study is to know Him and to be like Him in this world and in the world to come. When Jesus was in this world He was totally obedient to the Word of God while fulfilling the will of God, the saving of the world. He has commissioned His disciples to continue this work according to God’s Word. So then the Christian work, the work of the disciple, is to seek and save the lost and to teach them everything Jesus commanded us. When we make this work our occupation regardless of the vocation that pays our bills, we live lives pleasing to God and we walk as Jesus walked. When we spend time in God’s word to learn God’s commands for obeying ourselves and encouraging others in the church to do the same, we obey Jesus’ command to make disciples. We cannot live a life pleasing to God that does not engage God daily as Jesus did through the Word and prayer or fails to do the work of God that Jesus did, which is the reconciliation of men to God through Jesus and teaching them to obey all of His commands. All of us must be students, learners of Jesus from the Word of God led by the Holy Spirit of God, and we all must be teachers, of our children, our spouse, our neighbor and our fellow believer even as we ourselves are taught by others while walking with others who are likewise on the path of living obedient lives before Jesus.
