Mark 15:37-39 NIV “With a loud cry, Jesus breathed his last. The curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. And when the centurion, who stood there in front of Jesus, saw how he died, he said, “Surely this man was the Son of God!”” https://bible.com/bible/111/mrk.15.37-39.NIV
The tearing of the temple curtain in Mark 15 is packed with theological significance. First, it means the separation of God’s presence, the Holy of Holies, from the rest of humanity was removed. Now everyone in Christ has access to God in Christ Who is Himself God (Heb. 10.19-22). Second, it means the sacrificial system of animal sacrifice through the Levitical priests is over. Jesus is our High Priest, Whose one-time sacrifice completed all the sacrifices required of men (Hebrews 9.11-12). Jesus shed blood permanently and forever cleanses His reconciled people from all unrighteousness. Third, the tearing of the curtain was from top to bottom, signifying that this action was initiated by God for men and not from men to God. God moved first to reconcile men to Himself (2 Cor. 5.18-19). Our responsibility is to respond to the kindness and mercy of God. Fourth, the removal of the veil means access to God is not limited just to one class of people, priests, but to all people, including Gentiles (Ephes. 2.13-18). It has always been God’s heart that all people from every tribe and nation become His reconciled and adopted children. Finally, the tearing signified the coming fulfillment of God’s judgment against the temple system, which would be the end of seeing God as dwelling in one place through one people (Mark 13.1-2). God would now inhabit His people by His Holy Spirit. People from every nation as His church continued to spread the good news of what God has done for humanity through Jesus, the sacrificial Savior of the world.
