We Can’t Make God Up and Expect To Please God

“Why do Your disciples break the tradition of the elders? For they do not wash their hands when they eat bread.” And He answered and said to them, “Why do you yourselves also break the commandment of God for the sake of your tradition?” Matthew 15:2-3 NASB2020 https://bible.com/bible/2692/mat.15.3.NASB2020

The first temptation was to be like God through obtaining knowledge. We failed then but we continue to think we are God by making our own decisions about Who the One True God is and what that God truly requires from us. The One True God has made clear to us Who He is and what He requires of us by recording for us His words and deeds in the Scripture. It is the required work of humble people to study the Scriptures in order to know well God and obey completely everything He has commanded us. Yet few do this work, most ignore the Scriptures except for the small amount they hear in church if they even attend. In lieu of this study and obedience, we make up our own religion. God loves everyone we say and therefore everyone is free to live as they please we think. And so we do. We sleep with our unmarried partners, we drink to excess, we give little so make little impact upon the poor, the hungry, the cold and the persecuted. We don’t share our faith so people all around us pass from this life to the next ignorant of God and therefore condemned by God for ignoring Him their entire lives. We do as we please breaking God’s commands and failing to do those things He commands we do with earnestness and diligence. Like our first ancestors, like the religious leaders of Jesus’ day, we decide what is right and what will satisfy God. Fools we are really. The solution to this malady? Repent and ask God’s forgiveness for living such an arrogant life. Then make daily Bible reading a first priority. Finally, join with other true disciples of Jesus to study and apply the Scriptures God has given us for knowing Him and doing His will.

I’m reminded of Jesus’ words, if you love me, you will keep my commandments. When we make up our own gods, we aren’t believing and loving the one true God. Good post!
