What Does It Mean To Be Born Of The Spirit?

¶But I say, walk by the Spirit and you will not carry out the desire of the flesh. For the flesh sets its desire against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; for these are in opposition to one another, so that you do not do the things that you want…..envying, drunkenness, carousing, and things like these, of which I forewarn you, just as I have forewarned you, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God…….Now those who belong to Christ Jesus crucified the flesh with its passions and desires….. ¶If we live by the Spirit, let us also walk in step with the Spirit.” Galatians 5:16-17, 21, 24-25 LSB https://bible.com/bible/3345/gal.5.16-25.LSB

The person going to heaven, the actual Christian, is born again, not of the flesh but Spirit. Being born again means being adopted by God as a child of God through the work of God in Jesus, Who is God the Savior. We are born again when God’s Spirit brings us to repentance before God, the confession of our sins against God. We are born again when we believe God the Son, Jesus, died on the cross as my punishment for my sins and was raised from the dead to appropriate to me His righteousness so that I can stand before God the Father guiltless for those sins. Upon this spiritual birth, God assures my pardon and my future acceptance with Him in heaven and upon the new earth to live forever with Him and all those who have ever loved Him by giving to me now His Spirit to live within me now for empowering me to love Him by obeying His commands. Since I have repented from my sins and understand Jesus was punished for my sin, I no longer indulge those sins, for those who continue to practice the things for which Jesus died are not truly born again and will not inherit the kingdom of God. The Spirit within draws us to live like Jesus, Who lived only to do the will of the Father Who sent Him to die for us. So to those born again, who live with Jesus by the Spirit, live like Jesus, not perfectly, but consistently, demonstrated by an ever-increasing love for our neighbor manifested through a giving, serving, and sacrificing of ourselves. Ultimate love for our neighbor is working diligently to see them transition from death to life, from orphans destined for destruction to adopted children destined for living forever. God had come to seek and save the lost and has commissioned His servants to live as fishers of men, loving as He loves and continues to love.
