(Deu) 29:3, 8, 11-14, 17-19, 28 CJB “Nevertheless, to this day Adonai has not given you a heart to understand, eyes to see or ears to hear! Therefore, observe the words of this covenant and obey them; so that you can make everything you do prosper. The purpose is that you should enter into the covenant of Adonai your God and into his oath which Adonai your God is making with you today, (LY: ii) so that he can establish you today for himself as a people, and so that for you he will be God — as he said to you and as he swore to your ancestors, to Avraham, Yitz’chak and Ya‘akov. “But I am not making this covenant and this oath only with you. Rather, I am making it both with him who is standing here with us today before Adonai our God and also with him who is not here with us today. (LY: iii) So let there not be among you a man, woman, family or tribe whose heart turns away today from Adonai our God to go and serve the gods of those nations. Let there not be among you a root bearing such bitter poison and wormwood. If there is such a person, when he hears the words of this curse, he will bless himself secretly, saying to himself, ‘I will be all right, even though I will stubbornly keep doing whatever I feel like doing; so that I, although “dry,” [sinful,] will be added to the “watered” [righteous].’ But Adonai will not forgive him. Rather, the anger and jealousy of Adonai will blaze up against that person. Every curse written in this book will be upon him. Adonai will blot out his name from under heaven. “Things which are hidden belong to Adonai our God. But the things that have been revealed belong to us and our children forever, so that we can observe all the words of this Torah.”
As America approaches its 250th birthday celebration, Christians should pause to reflect carefully upon America’s blessing and the covenant warnings found throughout Scripture. Nations rise and fall under the sovereign hand of God, and Moses’ words to Israel in Deuteronomy 29 provide sobering truths for every people who have experienced God’s goodness yet are tempted toward pride, rebellion, and forgetfulness.
Moses declares:
“Things which are hidden belong to Adonai our God. But the things that have been revealed belong to us and our children forever, so that we can observe all the words of this Torah.”
— Deuteronomy 29:29 CJB
God revealed Himself to Israel through His mighty works, His covenant, and His Word. Yet many still hardened their hearts, convinced they could continue living however they pleased while avoiding God’s judgment.
That same danger exists today.
America’s Blessing Should Produce Gratitude and Obedience
America has experienced extraordinary blessings from God.
The founding of this nation was deeply influenced by biblical principles, Christian worldview assumptions, and the conviction that human rights come from God rather than government. Among the earliest and most foundational freedoms recognized in America was the freedom to worship God without state interference.
No nation has been perfect, and America certainly has sins in her history requiring humility and repentance. Yet Christians should not ignore the remarkable ways God has providentially blessed this nation with liberty, prosperity, gospel influence, missionary sending, and widespread access to Scripture.
Like Israel, however, blessing can produce dangerous spiritual blindness.
Moses warned the people against becoming self-assured while secretly saying:
“I will be all right, even though I will stubbornly keep doing whatever I feel like doing.”
Prosperity often tempts people to believe they no longer need God.
When comfort increases, repentance often decreases.
When wealth grows, humility frequently disappears.
When nations prosper materially, they often decay spiritually.
The Church Must Resist Spiritual Compromise
One of the greatest concerns facing America is not merely political decline but spiritual compromise within the Church itself.
Many modern churches increasingly accommodate worldly ideologies rather than standing firmly upon the authority of Scripture. The sacredness, truthfulness, and authority of God’s Word are frequently minimized in favor of cultural approval and human opinion.
Yet God’s covenant people are never called to follow the spirit of the age.
We are called to obey Jesus Christ as Lord.
Throughout history, God has always preserved a faithful remnant — believers who continue proclaiming the gospel, making disciples, and calling people to repentance and obedience regardless of cultural opposition.
That remnant must not lose courage now.
The Church cannot retreat into silence while biblical truth is mocked, distorted, or abandoned. Christians are called to speak truth graciously but boldly, reminding the world that God alone defines righteousness, morality, salvation, and eternal destiny.
America’s Blessing Requires Gospel Witness
The answer to America’s problems is not ultimately political power, nationalism, or cultural nostalgia.
The answer is repentance and gospel transformation.
God has revealed Himself repeatedly:
- through His Word,
- through His mighty acts in history,
- through creation,
- through His people,
- and ultimately through His Son Jesus Christ.
Jesus came to save sinners, establish His kingdom, and call all people everywhere to repentance and faith.
The Church therefore has a sacred responsibility:
- proclaim the gospel,
- make disciples,
- teach obedience to Jesus,
- and warn people lovingly of eternal judgment apart from Christ.
Scripture consistently teaches that eternal blessing belongs to those who repent and follow Jesus, while eternal separation awaits those who refuse Him.
These are difficult truths, but they are truths given in love.
A Faithful Remnant Must Remain Bold
As America celebrates 250 years, Christians should thank God for His kindness while also recognizing the urgent spiritual need of the nation.
Now is not the time for passivity.
Now is not the time for compromise.
Now is not the time for fear.
The faithful Church must grow in boldness, holiness, discipleship, prayer, and gospel witness.
We must remind our nation:
- God is the source of every blessing,
- Christ alone is Savior and King,
- obedience matters,
- truth matters,
- eternity matters,
- and the kingdom of God is everlasting.
The future hope of the world is not ultimately found in America.
It is found in the return of Jesus Christ and the establishment of His eternal kingdom.
Run Today’s Play
Take time today to thank God specifically for the blessings He has given you, your family, and this nation.
But also ask yourself:
Have comfort and prosperity weakened your spiritual urgency?
Pray for America.
Pray for revival within the Church.
Pray for courage to speak truth boldly and lovingly.
Then intentionally share the hope of Christ with someone this week.
A faithful remnant can still make an eternal difference when it refuses to compromise with the world and remains obedient to King Jesus.
