Be Great. Don’t Keep People From Experiencing Jesus

Matthew 18:1, 4, 7-9 NIV records, “At that time the disciples came to Jesus and asked, “Who, then, is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?” Therefore, whoever takes the lowly position of this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. Woe to the world because of the things that cause people to stumble! Such things must come, but woe to the person through whom they come! If your hand or your foot causes you to stumble, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to enter life maimed or crippled than to have two hands or two feet and be thrown into eternal fire. And if your eye causes you to stumble, gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to enter life with one eye than to have two eyes and be thrown into the fire of hell.” https://bible.com/bible/111/mat.18.4-9.NIV

God doesn’t have a problem with man’s pursuit of greatness; it is just the goal of that pursuit. Humility, love, and service are His goals for those who would pursue greatness. God is great, but He demonstrates incredible humility toward us, unconditional love for us, and constant service to sustain us and reveal Himself to us. A little child is humble, yet they do cause other children to stumble. Every stolen toy, every denial of a toy, causes another child to cry or stumble. Whenever we take from another or withhold from another, we can create resentment toward God, a stumbling against our neighbor God forbids. My mouth is probably my biggest cause of stumbling in others. The things I say meanly, harshly, and unkindly keep others from seeing and experiencing Jesus. Christians are to live humbly among the pagans, showing love and kindness through acts of service so that all people will see Jesus in them and desire a relationship with Him. If we are keeping people from experiencing Jesus because of our words or deeds, or lack thereof, we need to cut these things off from our lives and begin to truly love and serve people until all people obey Jesus as Lord.
