“so that you may live worthily of the Lord and please him in all respects – bearing fruit in every good deed, growing in the knowledge of God, being strengthened with all power according to his glorious might for the display of all patience and steadfastness, joyfully giving thanks to the Father who has qualified you to share in the saints’ inheritance in the light.” Colossians 1:10-12 NET https://bible.com/bible/107/col.1.10-12.NET
What does it mean to live worthy of the Lord and to please Him in all respects, for this is the will of God for us who claim to be children of God? Four things are mentioned in this passage that prove to God and men that we are living lives worthy of the Lord and pleasing Him. First, we bear fruit. This fruit is the eternal salvation of others whom we lead to Christ. This is why the church has been placed upon this earth to build the kingdom of God on earth as it is in heaven. Second, we are to grow in the knowledge of God. This means we are hunger to know God’s Word so we can do God’s will and teach God’s commands to the new disciples we made when we bore fruit for His glory. Third, we remain steadfast and patient in our endurance against men who oppose our message and the evil desires of our flesh that oppose God’s will. Patience is not passivity. It is perseverance while suffering the failure of our flesh and the sinfulness of men. Finally, we thank God for Who He is and what He has done for us as we look forward to God’s promise of eternal life with Him. We always rejoice in the hope before us that we will see Jesus and be rewarded by Him and with Him as we live forever in His presence among all those who have likewise lived worthy of the Lord, working constantly to please Him in all respects.
