(Ezr) 7:10 CJB “For ‘Ezra had set his heart on studying and practicing the Torah of ADONAI and teaching Isra’el the laws and rulings.”
There is a simple but powerful pattern in Ezra 7:10 for every Christian man who wants to know God’s Word and do what it says. Ezra set his heart on three things: studying God’s Word, practicing God’s Word, and teaching God’s Word to others.
He didn’t merely want to know more about God. He wanted what he learned about God to change how he lived—and then he wanted to help others do the same.
That is discipleship.
Ezra was greatly blessed by God, but not because he earned God’s favor through obedience. God graciously chose to use Ezra as part of His plan to fulfill His covenant promises to His people. Yet Ezra’s response to God’s grace was wholehearted devotion. He pursued God, trusted God, obeyed God, and encouraged others to do the same.
Know God’s Word and Do What It Says
Ezra demonstrated faith when his circumstances were uncertain. Rather than allowing what he could see—or what he feared—to determine what he believed, Ezra trusted God and His promises.
That is where Christian men are often tested.
Will I trust God when finances are uncertain?
Will I obey God when obedience costs me something?
Will I follow Scripture when my desires are pulling me somewhere else?
Will I believe that God’s way is best even when another way looks easier?
Ezra had set his heart on God’s Word. This wasn’t casual Bible reading. He had determined beforehand that God’s Word would shape both what he believed and how he lived.
We need that same determination.
For those who belong to God through faith in Jesus Christ, God is not distant. Through Christ we have been adopted by the Father, Christ calls His people His brothers, and the Holy Spirit dwells within us as our Helper, Comforter, and Guide.
Our response should be to seek the Lord through His Word, walk together with His church, obey the leading of His Spirit, and trust that what God says is true and what God commands is good.
Jesus Himself gives us the perfect example. He came to do His Father’s will. He calls us to deny ourselves, take up our cross, and follow Him.
Study. Practice. Teach.
Notice Ezra’s order:
Study it. Know what God has actually said.
Practice it. Don’t settle for knowing Scripture without obeying Scripture.
Teach it. Help someone else know and obey God too.
Christian maturity isn’t measured merely by how much Bible knowledge we accumulate. Biblical knowledge should produce biblical obedience.
As we walk faithfully with God, we experience the blessings of fellowship with Him: joy in His presence, peace in trouble, strength to obey, and hope for the future.
And we live with the anticipation that one day faith will become sight and we will enjoy the fullness of His presence forever.
Run Today’s Play
Set your heart before circumstances set it for you.
Today, choose one truth from God’s Word that you already know but need to obey more faithfully. Write it down. Pray over it. Then do something specific today because God said it.
And don’t stop there.
Find one man—your son, friend, coworker, or brother in Christ—and share with him what God is teaching you.
Study it. Practice it. Teach it.
Be an Ezra. Know God’s Word and do what it says.
