Mercy Is A Universal Human Need

“For whoever keeps the entire law, and yet stumbles at one point, is guilty of breaking it all. For he who said, Do not commit adultery, also said, Do not murder. So if you do not commit adultery, but you murder, you are a lawbreaker. Speak and act as those who are to be judged by the law of freedom. For judgment is without mercy to the one who has not shown mercy. Mercy triumphs over judgment.” James 2:10-13 CSB https://bible.com/bible/1713/jas.2.10-13.CSB

I certainly need to be more merciful. I ask God daily for mercy when I ask Him to forgive me for the many sins I commit against Him in my negative thoughts, words, and deeds against my neighbor. I depend on God’s mercy triumphing over judgment against me because of His judgment without mercy against the Lord Jesus on the cross. When Jesus asked for mercy, He received none so that we who deserve none could receive mercy because Jesus was condemned for me. I then need to be more merciful toward my neighbor, who also needs much mercy. We all know we are not perfect, but we like to think we are good and, therefore, do not really need God’s mercy. We break the perfect moral standards of God daily in our thoughts, words, and deeds, but not all of them. Deceiving ourselves that we obey most of them, we presume we are good and, therefore, must be acceptable to God. This arrogant thinking will take us straight to hell if we don’t repent. Our perfect God requires our perfect obedience to everything He has commanded. This is how the Lord Jesus lived, which is why He alone deserved mercy because of His works yet exchanged His perfection for our imperfection at the cross, taking the condemnation we deserve upon Himself. Since we have all sinned against God, let us humble ourselves before God and implore His pardon through the Lord Jesus. Then, let us turn toward one another and extend the same mercy we have received from the Lord Jesus to one another.
