Jeremiah 32:17-23 NIV “Ah, Sovereign Lord, you have made the heavens and the earth by your great power and outstretched arm. Nothing is too hard for you. You show love to thousands but bring the punishment for the parents’ sins into the laps of their children after them. Great and mighty God, whose name is the Lord Almighty, great are your purposes and mighty are your deeds. Your eyes are open to the ways of all mankind; you reward each person according to their conduct and as their deeds deserve. You performed signs and wonders in Egypt and have continued them to this day, in Israel and among all mankind, and have gained the renown that is still yours. You brought your people Israel out of Egypt with signs and wonders, by a mighty hand and an outstretched arm and with great terror. You gave them this land you had sworn to give their ancestors, a land flowing with milk and honey. They came in and took possession of it, but they did not obey you or follow your law; they did not do what you commanded them to do. So you brought all this disaster on them.” https://bible.com/bible/111/jer.32.17-23.NIV
Jeremiah, after an act of hope in God’s future for Israel, broke out in prayer and praise to God, remembering what God had done for Israel while explaining their current negative condition. God has since moved from the Old Covenant to the New Covenant in His purposes for humanity, bringing about reconciliation with Him. Here is how that prayer might look today:
“Ah, Sovereign Lord, You have made the heavens and the earth by Your great power and outstretched arm. Nothing is too hard for You. You have shown Your love fully in Christ, who gave His life for the world, and in Him You remember our sins no more. Great and mighty God, revealed now as our Father through Jesus, great are Your purposes and mighty are Your deeds. Your eyes see all humanity, and You judge each person not only by deeds but by their faith in Your Son, rewarding those who abide in Him with eternal life.
You performed the greatest sign and wonder by raising Jesus from the dead, a miracle that continues to save and transform people to this day, both in Israel and among the nations, and through it You have gained everlasting renown. You brought Your people into freedom, not through Egypt this time, but through deliverance from sin, death, and Satan, with Your mighty hand and outstretched arm displayed on the cross. You have given us the inheritance You promised—an eternal kingdom, a better land filled with the life of Your Spirit.
Though humanity did not obey Your law and fell under judgment, in Christ You have fulfilled the law on our behalf. Where once disaster came through disobedience, now grace abounds through the obedience of Jesus, so that we who believe may walk in the new covenant, empowered by the Spirit, forgiven and free.”
