Spiritual Warfare for Christian Men: Learning to Fight God’s Battles

(Jdg) 3:1-2, 4-6 CJB “These are the nations which Adonai allowed to remain, in order to put to the test all the people of Isra’el who had not known any of the wars with Kena‘an. This was only so that the generations of Isra’el who had previously known nothing of war might learn about it. They stayed there to test whether Isra’el would pay attention to the mitzvot of Adonai, which, through Moshe, he had ordered their ancestors to obey. So the people of Isra’el lived among the Kena‘ani, Hitti, Emori, P’rizi, Hivi and Y’vusi; taking their daughters as their wives, giving their own daughters to their sons and serving their gods.”

Spiritual Warfare for Christian Men is not optional. In Judges 3, God allowed certain pagan nations to remain in the land so future generations of Israel would learn about war and be tested in their obedience.

The lesson was never that Israel should trust in military strength.

The lesson was that the battle belongs to the Lord and His people must trust Him enough to obey Him completely.

Spiritual Warfare for Christian Men Requires Trust in God

Israel’s greatest failures did not come because the enemy was too strong.

They came because God’s people compromised.

Instead of driving out idolatry, they accommodated it. Instead of influencing the nations, they were influenced by them. They intermarried with the pagans, adopted their practices, and ultimately served their false gods.

The real battle was always a battle for the heart.

The same is true today.

Our Weapons Are Truth and Obedience

America has a rich history of biblical influence, but no nation remains faithful simply because previous generations honored God.

Every generation must decide whom it will serve.

The Christian’s warfare is not fought with violence or coercion. Our weapons are the truth of God’s Word, fervent prayer, faithful witness, sacrificial love, and obedience to Jesus Christ.

We wage war by taking every thought captive to obey Christ, exposing lies with truth, and living lives that demonstrate the wisdom and goodness of God.

When the Church compromises with the values of the culture, it loses its witness.

When believers remain faithful, they become salt and light in a dark world.

The Greatest Battle Is Against Worldliness

Many institutions today are driven by greed, pride, and self-interest.

Sadly, many professing Christians have adopted those same priorities.

Jesus calls His followers to seek first the kingdom of God, to store up treasure in heaven, and to love Him above money, comfort, or reputation.

Christian men are called to lead differently.

We must reject the idols of our age and model integrity, holiness, generosity, and courage in our homes, businesses, churches, and communities.

As we faithfully make disciples and teach others to obey everything Christ commanded, we engage in the spiritual warfare that advances His kingdom.

Run Today’s Play

  • Identify one worldly belief or habit that competes with wholehearted obedience to Christ and surrender it to Him.
  • Spend time in prayer asking God to strengthen you for today’s spiritual battles.
  • Read Scripture before consuming news or social media so your mind is shaped by truth first.
  • Speak graciously but boldly when God gives you opportunities to defend biblical truth.
  • Encourage one person today to take a step of obedience toward Jesus.

The Church does not change the world by blending into it. We change the world by faithfully following Jesus, proclaiming His gospel, making disciples, and trusting God to accomplish His purposes through obedient men and women who refuse to bow to the idols of their generation.
