The Day of the Lord Is Near: Prepare to Meet King Jesus

(Zep) 1:2-3, 6-7, 14-15 CJB “I will completely sweep away everything off the face of the land,” says Adonai. “I will sweep away humans and animals, the birds in the air and the fish in the sea, also the wicked and what makes them stumble; I will wipe humanity off the land,” says Adonai. those who turned away from following Adonai, and those who haven’t sought Adonai or consulted him at all.” Keep silent before Adonai Elohim, for the Day of Adonai is near. Adonai has prepared a sacrifice; he has set apart those he invited. The great Day of Adonai is near, near and coming very quickly; Hear the sound of the Day of Adonai! When it’s here, even a warrior will cry bitterly. That Day is a Day of fury, a Day of trouble and distress, a Day of waste and desolation, a Day of darkness and gloom, a Day of clouds and thick fog,”

The Day of the Lord is near. That is the sobering message of Zephaniah, and it remains just as true today. Every sunrise brings us one day closer to Christ’s return, when He will judge the world in righteousness and establish His eternal kingdom.

God’s delay is not weakness or forgetfulness. It is mercy.

Scripture reveals that the Lord is patient, desiring people to repent and come to the knowledge of the truth rather than perish under His judgment. Every extra day is another opportunity for sinners to turn to Christ and receive forgiveness.

The Day of the Lord Is Near for Every Person

Many people live as though Jesus will never return.

They pursue wealth instead of holiness.

They chase pleasure instead of righteousness.

They exalt self instead of bowing before God.

Yet the Bible consistently warns that a day of reckoning is coming. Those who reject God’s authority and refuse His gracious offer of salvation will stand before Him as Judge.

This should not produce arrogance in believers but urgency and compassion.

God’s Love Does Not Cancel God’s Justice

One of the greatest misunderstandings today is that God’s love eliminates His judgment.

The cross proves otherwise.

At Calvary, God’s love and God’s justice met perfectly. Jesus willingly bore the penalty of sin so that all who repent, trust Him, and follow Him might receive eternal life.

Salvation is freely offered to us, but it cost the Son of God everything.

Those who receive Christ are welcomed into His everlasting kingdom.

Those who continually reject Him remain under judgment because they have refused the only Savior God has provided.

The New Earth Awaits God’s Children

This present world is temporary.

One day Christ will make all things new. Sin will be gone. Death will be defeated. Suffering will cease. God’s people will dwell with Him forever in perfect joy and abundance.

Our ultimate hope is not found in making this fallen world our paradise but in faithfully serving Christ until He brings His perfect kingdom.

That future should motivate us to endure hardship, pursue holiness, and proclaim the gospel while there is still time.

Work While There Is Still Time

If the Day of the Lord is near, then our priorities should reflect that reality.

We should love God wholeheartedly.

We should obey everything Christ has commanded.

We should share the gospel with urgency because eternity is at stake.

Every conversation, every act of kindness, and every faithful witness may be used by God to rescue another soul from judgment and bring them into His glorious kingdom.

Run Today’s Play

  • Thank God for His patience and mercy toward sinners.
  • Examine your own life for any area where you are resisting Christ’s authority.
  • Pray by name for someone who needs to repent and believe the gospel.
  • Intentionally share the hope of Jesus with one person this week.
  • Live today in light of eternity, remembering that Christ could return at any time.

The Day of the Lord is not merely a doctrine to study—it is a reality to prepare for. May we be found faithful, rejoicing in the salvation Christ purchased at the cross and laboring diligently so that many others may enter His eternal kingdom before that great and awesome day arrives.
