Acts 28.27 describes this people’s heart has become calloused; they hardly hear with their ears, and they have closed their eyes. Otherwise they might see with their eyes, hear with their ears, understand with their hearts and turn, and I would heal them.
Who is God describing in this quote? His religious followers.
The result of His people ignoring His word was their missing His work among them through the promised Messiah Jesus.
These past 70 years has seen an ever increasing loss of Christian influence within the American culture. The slide has garnered so much momentum that now Christians aren’t even free to practice their faith in this secular environment without being sued and put out of business due to their intolerance.
Certainly people are allowed to go to Church on Sunday, but we are not to bring that religion into the marketplace on Monday. And most Church attendees don’t.
What is it about our religion that the secular environment fears? Truth telling? Not stealing? Not lying? Not killing? Our society needs everyone doing these things if it is to survive.
What the culture doesn’t want to hear is that any of its moral choices are wrong. Most of these choices hover around areas of sexual immorality from the Christian perspective: adultery, fornication, homosexuality, abortion.
Perhaps these immoralities have become so controversial these past 20 years because the Bible no longer sets the agenda for too many Christians. So many church attendees have so effectively kept Sunday’s message from Monday’s living that they have become indistinguishable from those who spent no time at Church on Sunday.
Those who attend Church but do nothing with God’s instruction are like those described in our verse: their heart has become calloused; they hardly hear with their ears, and they have closed their eyes.
Our land and our Church suffers as a result.
The remedy? Application of God’s commands in our lives.
When we obey God, when we take God at His Word, when we surrender our will to His way then God says He will heal us, those who love God and attend His Church, and by healing us, He will heal our land.
