God’s Promises and Man’s Responsibility: Faith That Obeys

(Psa) 103:17-18 CJB “But the mercy of ADONAI on those who fear him is from eternity past to eternity future, and his righteousness extends to his children’s children, provided they keep his covenant and remember to follow his precepts.”

God’s promises and man’s responsibility are inseparable. God is always faithful to His Word, but His promises never give us permission to neglect our responsibilities.

We love God’s promises. But are we equally committed to obeying His commands?

God’s Promises and Man’s Responsibility

One of the great mysteries of Scripture is the relationship between God’s sovereignty and man’s responsibility.

Ephesians 2:8–10 teaches that we are saved by grace through faith, not by works, but that we are created in Christ Jesus for good works.

Salvation is entirely God’s gift. Obedience is the expected fruit.

Jesus explained this relationship using the vine and branches in John 15. Apart from Him, we can do nothing. Yet branches that bear no fruit face judgment.

We cannot produce spiritual fruit apart from Christ, but neither can we claim to abide in Christ while remaining indifferent to His commands.

There is no genuine being in Christ that does not produce doing for Christ. And there is no doing for Christ acceptable to God apart from being in Christ.

We cannot earn salvation through obedience, but genuine salvation produces obedience.

God’s Promises Require Faithful Parenting

This truth becomes especially personal when I consider my children and grandchildren.

I have prayed, and continue praying, for their salvation. But I have also worked hard to teach them God’s Word, demonstrate His ways, and lead them toward Christ.

Why? Because God commands fathers to train their children.

Deuteronomy 6:6–7 instructs parents to teach God’s commands diligently. Proverbs 22:6 emphasizes the lasting influence of training a child in the right way.

But neither passage guarantees that faithful parents will produce believing children.

God holds me responsible for faithfully teaching my children. He does not give me the power to regenerate their hearts.

I want my children and grandchildren to spend eternity with me. But more importantly, I want them to spend eternity with Jesus!

They must personally repent, believe, and follow Him.

I cannot make that decision for them.

Trust God’s Sovereignty While Obeying His Commands

Scripture reveals another tension.

God desires people to be saved (1 Timothy 2:4). Christ’s sacrifice is sufficient for all, yet not everyone receives salvation.

Jesus calls everyone who would follow Him to deny themselves, take up their cross, and follow Him (Luke 9:23).

God’s sovereignty never eliminates man’s responsibility.

And man’s responsibility never diminishes God’s sovereignty.

We may not fully understand how these truths fit together, but we are commanded to trust and obey.

Philippians 2:12–13 captures this beautifully. Paul commands believers to work out their salvation with fear and trembling because God is working in them to accomplish His purposes.

Notice the relationship.

We work because God is at work in us!

Not to purchase salvation, but because His grace has transformed us.

A Legacy of Faithful Obedience

Psalm 103 reminds us that God’s covenant mercy reaches beyond our generation.

What an incredible encouragement for fathers and grandfathers!

But we cannot presume upon His promises while neglecting His commands.

We must pray for our families, teach them Scripture, model repentance, demonstrate obedience, and continually point them toward Jesus.

Then we trust God with the results.

Our responsibility is faithfulness. The power to save belongs to God.

Run Today’s Play

Ask: Are you claiming God’s promises while neglecting the responsibilities He has given you?

Examine your obedience. Identify one command of Christ you know but have neglected. Repent and obey Him today.

Invest in the next generation. Pray specifically for your children or grandchildren, then intentionally teach or demonstrate one biblical truth.

Men, don’t use God’s sovereignty as an excuse for spiritual inactivity!

Trust His promises. Obey His commands. Leave a legacy that points generations to Jesus Christ!
