Who Is True Israel? God’s Promise of Eternal Life

(Ezk) 37:4, 11, 14, 24, 27 CJB “Then he said to me, “Prophesy over these bones! Say to them, ‘Dry bones! Hear what ADONAI has to say! Then he said to me, “Human being! These bones are the whole house of Isra’el; and they are saying, ‘Our bones have dried up, our hope is gone, and we are completely cut off.’ I will put my Spirit in you; and you will be alive. Then I will place you in your own land; and you will know that I, ADONAI, have spoken, and that I have done it,’ says ADONAI.” My servant David will be king over them, and all of them will have one shepherd; they will live by my rulings and keep and observe my regulations. My home will be with them; I will be their God, and they will be my people.”

Who is true Israel, and who will inherit God’s promises? Ezekiel 37 reveals something far greater than the restoration of a nation. It points us toward the Messiah, the gift of God’s Spirit, and eternal life in His presence.

Israel had experienced devastating judgment. Jerusalem was destroyed, the temple lay in ruins, and the people were carried into Babylonian exile.

Their hope was gone.

“These bones are the whole house of Isra’el; and they are saying, ‘Our bones have dried up, our hope is gone, and we are completely cut off.’” (Ezekiel 37:11 CJB)

But God wasn’t finished!

God’s Promise to Restore the Dead

God commanded Ezekiel to prophesy over a valley of dry bones. “Dry bones! Hear what ADONAI has to say!” (Ezekiel 37:4 CJB)

What an extraordinary command!

These bones couldn’t hear, respond, or restore themselves. Only God could give them life.

God promised to restore His people to their land and breathe His Spirit into them.

“I will put my Spirit in you; and you will be alive.” (Ezekiel 37:14 CJB)

Israel needed more than geographical restoration. They needed spiritual life!

Some identify the establishment of modern Israel in 1948 as the fulfillment of this prophecy.

But Ezekiel’s vision demands more than possession of land.

God promised a people transformed by His Spirit, obedient to His commands, and united under one eternal King.

Who Is True Israel Under the Messiah?

God declared: “My servant David will be king over them, and all of them will have one shepherd.” (Ezekiel 37:24 CJB)

David had been dead for centuries!

God was pointing toward David’s promised descendant, Jesus Christ, the eternal King and Good Shepherd.

And this is where the promise becomes personal.

Romans 9:6 reminds us that not everyone descended from Israel belongs to Israel in the same covenantal sense.

Galatians 3:29 declares that those who belong to Christ are Abraham’s offspring and heirs according to the promise.

Jew and Gentile alike receive salvation through faith in Jesus Christ!

Ethnicity cannot save anyone. Neither can religious heritage, national identity, or possession of land.

Only Jesus saves!

Gentile believers are grafted into God’s people through faith, while Jewish believers receive their promised Messiah (Romans 11:17–24).

There is one Savior, one Spirit, and one family of God.

God’s Eternal Dwelling With His People

Ezekiel’s prophecy reaches its glorious climax:

“My home will be with them; I will be their God, and they will be my people.” (Ezekiel 37:27 CJB)

Revelation 21:3 echoes this promise!

God will dwell with His redeemed people forever.

The New Jerusalem descends upon the new earth. Sin, death, sorrow, and separation are gone.

All who belong to Christ will live eternally in God’s presence.

Jew and Gentile. One redeemed family. One eternal King!

The present heavens and earth will give way to God’s promised new creation (2 Peter 3:10–13).

Our eternal hope isn’t found in the preservation of an earthly nation or the boundaries of a particular territory.

Our hope is Jesus Christ, who gives life to the spiritually dead!

The Question Every Man Must Answer

Ezekiel’s dry bones represent a people who had lost all hope.

But spiritual death remains humanity’s greatest problem.

You cannot revive yourself through morality, religious activity, or family heritage.

You must be born of the Spirit!

Jesus told Nicodemus in John 3:3 that unless someone is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.

God still brings life where there is death.

And He does so through Jesus Christ!
