Obedience to Jesus: The Narrow Road That Leads to Life

(Mat) 7:13-14, 21, 24, 26 CJB “Go in through the narrow gate; for the gate that leads to destruction is wide and the road broad, and many travel it; but it is a narrow gate and a hard road that leads to life, and only a few find it. “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord!’ will enter the Kingdom of Heaven, only those who do what my Father in heaven wants. “So, everyone who hears these words of mine and acts on them will be like a sensible man who built his house on bedrock. But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not act on them will be like a stupid man who built his house on sand.”

Obedience to Jesus is not what earns our salvation, but it is the unmistakable evidence that our faith is real. In Matthew 7, Jesus closes the Sermon on the Mount with sobering warnings. He speaks of two gates, two roads, two builders, and ultimately two eternal destinies. The difference between them is not merely what they profess—it is whether they obey.

Many claim to know Christ. Few choose the narrow road of faithful obedience.

The Narrow Road Is the Road of Obedience

Jesus describes the Christian life as entering through a narrow gate and walking a difficult road. It is not popular, comfortable, or easy. It demands dying to self, resisting sin, and following Christ wherever He leads.

This is why Jesus warns, “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord!’ will enter the Kingdom of Heaven, only those who do what my Father in heaven wants.”

Our Lord is not teaching salvation by works. Rather, He is teaching what the rest of Scripture confirms: genuine faith always produces obedience.

James, the half-brother of Jesus, wrote, “Faith without works is dead.” He had watched Jesus live in perfect obedience long before the world recognized Him as the Messiah. James understood that authentic faith transforms the way a person lives.

Jesus Obeyed Perfectly So We Could Be Saved

The gospel begins with Christ’s perfect obedience.

Jesus fulfilled every command of His Father without sin. Because He obeyed perfectly, He alone could become the spotless Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world.

His righteousness is credited to those who repent and believe.

His death pays for our disobedience.

His resurrection declares His victory over sin and death.

Now the risen Christ reigns as Judge of all mankind.

The One who perfectly obeyed the Father now calls His followers to obey Him.

Obedience to Jesus Reveals Genuine Faith

Jesus concludes His sermon with the illustration of two builders.

Both heard His teaching.

Only one acted upon it.

The wise man built his house upon the rock because he not only listened to Christ’s words—he obeyed them. The foolish man heard the same truth but ignored it.

Storms came to both homes.

Only one remained standing.

The difference was not knowledge.

The difference was obedience to Jesus.

Many admire Christ’s teaching.

Few surrender to His authority.

Even demons believe that Jesus is the Son of God, yet they remain in rebellion. Biblical faith is never mere agreement with facts. True faith gladly submits to the Lordship of Christ.

The Father’s Will Is That We Become Like His Son

What does the Father desire from His children?

He desires that we become like His Firstborn Son.

Jesus loved the Father with all His heart, soul, mind, and strength.

He loved people sacrificially and unconditionally.

He sought and saved the lost.

He glorified the Father in everything He did.

Those who belong to Christ increasingly reflect that same life.

They obey His commands.

They pursue holiness.

They proclaim the gospel.

They make disciples.

They desire to see others reconciled to God and taught to obey everything Jesus commanded.

This is not legalism.

This is discipleship.

The narrow road may be difficult, but it leads to eternal life. The broad road may seem easier, but it ends in destruction.

Choose the narrow road.

Choose faithful obedience.

Choose Christ.
