Returning to God: What Asa Teaches About a Healthier Culture

(2 Ch) 15:2-3, 5-6, 15 CJB “he went out to meet Asa and said to him, “Listen to me, Asa, and all Y’hudah and Binyamin! ADONAI is with you, as long as you are with him; if you seek him, you will find him; but if you abandon him, he will abandon you! For a long time Isra’el was without the true God, without a cohen who could teach, and without Torah. In those times people going about their business were insecure, and great disturbances afflicted all the inhabitants of the lands; so that they were shattered to pieces, nation against nation and city against city, as God troubled them with every kind of distress. All Y’hudah was full of joy at this oath; for they had sworn with all their heart and had sought him with all their will; and they found him, and ADONAI gave them rest all around.”

Returning to God changes how we live, lead, and treat others. When people abandon Him, the consequences reach beyond their personal lives into their families and communities.

Second Chronicles 15 describes that very problem.

Azariah told King Asa, “ADONAI is with you, as long as you are with him; if you seek him, you will find him; but if you abandon him, he will abandon you!”

The people had lived without the One true God, without a teaching priest, and without God’s instruction. Insecurity, disturbances, and conflict marked their lives.

Their rebellion had public consequences.

Abandoning God Damages a Culture

God’s commands protect the relationships that hold communities together. Truthfulness builds trust. Faithfulness strengthens marriage. Justice protects people from exploitation.

When we reject those commands, people suffer.

Dishonesty corrupts business and government. Adultery wounds families. Greed exploits neighbors. Violence destroys lives. Selfishness leaves vulnerable people without help.

These choices shape a culture because they shape how people live together.

America’s history includes substantial Christian influence and grievous failures to follow Christ. We need honesty about both. Our present likewise deserves examination rather than either blanket condemnation or automatic approval.

Examine Political Agendas Clearly

Government matters because laws and leaders affect real people. Political platforms reveal different priorities, and those differences deserve accurate attention.

One party’s 2024 national platform explicitly supports abortion access, same-sex marriage, and gender-transition care, while the other opposes late-term abortion and taxpayer-funded transition surgeries, while affirming the sanctity of marriage.

Clear thinking requires reading actual proposals and examining candidates’ records, and the history of thier actions.

A campaign promise is no guarantee of effort to accomplish it.

Before repeating an accusation or quotation, verify it. Our responsibility to tell the truth continues when a misleading claim would benefit our preferred side.

Returning to God Requires Action

Asa responded by removing idols, repairing the Lord’s altar, and gathering the people to seek God. Their repentance changed their priorities and practices.

Verse 15 records their wholehearted commitment, their joy, and the rest God gave them.

Judah lived under God’s covenant with Israel. We cannot transfer those promises directly to America or guarantee prosperity after an election.

Nevertheless, repentance still produces good fruit.

Families become healthier when spouses practice fidelity. Communities become stronger when neighbors practice generosity. Institutions become more trustworthy when leaders practice honesty and justice.

We should desire these changes and demonstrate them ourselves.

Demanding integrity while excusing our own dishonesty weakens our witness. Defending families while neglecting our own responsibilities exposes a divided heart.

Returning to God begins with submitting ourselves to His correction.

Whatever happens politically, our commission remains: follow Jesus, teach His Word, serve our neighbors, and make disciples, and align our vote with those who most closely seek the same.
