You Cannot Earn God’s Forgiveness Why Jesus Had to Die

(Gal) 2:16, 21 CJB “even so, we have come to realize that a person is not declared righteous by God on the ground of his legalistic observance of Torah commands, but through the Messiah Yeshua’s trusting faithfulness. Therefore, we too have put our trust in Messiah Yeshua and become faithful to him, in order that we might be declared righteous on the ground of the Messiah’s trusting faithfulness and not on the ground of our legalistic observance of Torah commands. For on the ground of legalistic observance of Torah commands, no one will be declared righteous. I do not reject God’s gracious gift; for if the way in which one attains righteousness is through legalism, then the Messiah’s death was pointless.”

You cannot earn God’s forgiveness. No amount of religious activity, good behavior, or personal sacrifice can make you righteous before a holy God. Yet men continue trying to prove themselves worthy of heaven through their own efforts.

Paul could not have made this clearer.

You Cannot Earn God’s Forgiveness Through Religion

Every religion that teaches men to earn acceptance with God through their own efforts faces the same problem: How much obedience is enough?

How many good deeds outweigh one sin? How much religious devotion erases a lifetime of rebellion?

The answer is none!

Even those who reject religion may attempt to justify themselves by appealing to their morality, accomplishments, or personal standards. But rejecting God’s authority doesn’t eliminate His judgment.

Men, we cannot establish the terms by which God must accept us!

We may be accustomed to earning our position, providing for our families, and proving our worth through hard work. Those responsibilities have their place, but that mindset cannot save us.

God alone determines what righteousness requires.

And His standard is perfection!

James 2:10 reminds us that whoever keeps the whole law but stumbles at one point becomes guilty of breaking it.

Our problem isn’t that we haven’t tried hard enough. Our problem is that we are sinners who cannot make ourselves righteous.

The Cross Proves We Cannot Save Ourselves

Consider what Paul is saying in Galatians 2:21.

If righteousness could be obtained through obedience to the law, Christ died for nothing!

Think about that.

The eternal Son of God took on human flesh, lived in perfect obedience to His Father, and willingly offered Himself as the sacrifice for our sins.

Why?

Because there was no other way for sinful men to be reconciled to a holy God.

We enter this world with a sinful nature. And our own disobedience confirms our guilt before Him.

Romans 3:23 declares that all have sinned and fall short of God’s glory.

Only Jesus, fully God and fully man, lived the sinless life we could never live.

Then He bore the condemnation our sins deserved.

His resurrection demonstrated His victory over sin and death and confirmed the sufficiency of His sacrifice.

The cross wasn’t God’s backup plan. It was His gracious provision for sinners who could never save themselves!

You Cannot Earn God’s Forgiveness, But You Can Receive It

Here’s the wonderful news!

God does not demand that we accomplish what only Jesus could accomplish.

He calls us to repent and place our faith in Jesus Christ.

Forgiveness isn’t a reward for religious performance. It is God’s gracious gift, purchased through the death of His Son.

And genuine saving faith produces a changed life.

We don’t obey Jesus to earn salvation. We obey Him because He has saved us!

Men, stop imagining that your accomplishments, morality, or religious involvement can make God indebted to you.

He is the Judge. We are the guilty.

But through Jesus Christ, guilty sinners can be declared righteous!

That’s grace!

Run Today’s Play

Ask yourself: Am I trusting completely in what Jesus accomplished for my salvation, or am I still depending on something I have done?

1. Examine your confidence. Read Galatians 2:16–21 and Ephesians 2:8–10. Thank God that salvation rests on Christ’s finished work, not your performance.

2. Share the truth. This week, ask another man, “If God asked you why He should welcome you into heaven, what would you say?” Use his answer as an opportunity to explain the gospel.

Men, you cannot earn God’s forgiveness. Stop trusting in yourself and put your trust in Jesus Christ alone!
