The Work of Ministry: Every Christian Has a Mission

(Eph) 4:12-13, 17 CJB “Their task is to equip God’s people for the work of service that builds the body of the Messiah, until we all arrive at the unity implied by trusting and knowing the Son of God, at full manhood, at the standard of maturity set by the Messiah’s perfection. Therefore I say this — indeed, in union with the Lord I insist on it: do not live any longer as the pagans live, with their sterile ways of thinking.”

Many Christians mistakenly believe the work of ministry belongs primarily to pastors, elders, or church staff. Scripture teaches something very different. According to Ephesians 4, Christian leaders are not called to do all the ministry—they are called to equip God’s people to do the ministry.

This changes everything.

Every believer has been saved, gifted, and commissioned by Christ to participate in building His Kingdom. The Church is healthiest when every member understands and fulfills the work God has assigned him.

Christian Leaders Equip God’s People

Paul writes that Christ gave leaders to His Church “to equip God’s people for the work of service that builds the body of the Messiah.”

The role of pastors, elders, teachers, and other spiritual leaders is not to create spectators but servants.

Their calling is to train God’s people to become increasingly effective in advancing Christ’s mission.

Healthy churches do not produce consumers.

They produce disciples who make disciples.

Every Christian Has a Role in the Work of Ministry

The Church functions much like a championship team.

Jesus is the Owner.

He purchased the entire organization with His own blood.

He appoints player-coaches who train His people to live on mission.

Every believer wears Christ’s jersey.

Some serve as player-coaches who equip others.

Most serve as faithful teammates carrying out the mission Christ has entrusted to them.

No one sits on the bench.

Every Christian has a position to play in the work of ministry.

Our assignment is clear:

  • Seek those who are far from Christ.
  • Make disciples.
  • Teach believers to obey everything Jesus commanded.
  • Build one another toward spiritual maturity.

When every believer embraces this mission, the Church grows both in number and in holiness.

Think Like Someone Who Belongs to Christ

Paul immediately follows his teaching on ministry by saying,

“Do not live any longer as the pagans live, with their sterile ways of thinking.”

Everything begins with how we think.

The world thinks life is about personal success, comfort, possessions, and self-fulfillment.

Followers of Jesus think differently.

We no longer belong to ourselves.

We belong to Christ.

Our lives exist to accomplish His purposes, advance His Kingdom, and glorify His name.

A transformed mind produces a transformed life.

Maturity Looks Like Jesus

The goal of the Christian life is not simply church attendance or biblical knowledge.

It is Christlikeness.

Paul says we continue growing until we reach “the standard of maturity set by the Messiah’s perfection.”

That means growing together in:

  • Character
  • Commitment
  • Unity
  • Holiness
  • Obedience
  • Love for God and others

As we mature, we increasingly reflect the One who purchased us.

Jesus perfectly obeyed His Father in every circumstance.

Those who belong to Him increasingly desire to do the same.

That is the ultimate purpose of the work of ministry—to see more people become more like Jesus.

You are not a spectator in God’s Kingdom.

You are a member of Christ’s team.
