Deuteronomy 5:4, 22, 26, 29, 32-33 NIV “The Lord spoke to you face to face out of the fire on the mountain. These are the commandments the Lord proclaimed in a loud voice to your whole assembly there on the mountain from out of the fire, the cloud and the deep darkness; and he added nothing more. Then he wrote them on two stone tablets and gave them to me. (You replied) For what mortal has ever heard the voice of the living God speaking out of fire, as we have, and survived? ( God replied) Oh, that their hearts would be inclined to fear me and keep all my commands always, so that it might go well with them and their children forever! So be careful to do what the Lord your God has commanded you; do not turn aside to the right or to the left. Walk in obedience to all that the Lord your God has commanded you, so that you may live and prosper and prolong your days in the land that you will possess.” https://bible.com/bible/111/deu.5.4-33.NIV
A great way to commemorate Cinco De Mayo is to read and meditate upon the fifth book and fifth chapter of the Bible. Deuteronomy 5 is a retelling of the giving of the Ten Commandments. These commands God spoke by His own voice in the hearing of all His people. Only ten commands God gave, nine more than the one He gave in paradise before the rebellion against Him by man led by satan. These Ten Commandments remain nearly universal among humanity as the standard definition of right and wrong. They are seared upon our conscience from birth, a divine homing device to bring us back to God, the author of righteousness and the Judge of our souls for eternity. All of these commands are so simple and so logical for our well-being. We continue to ignore them and disobey them to our demise. Our leaders have too long mocked God and His ways. Instead, they promote pleasure and their own wisdom above God to the poverty of our nation. Our cities, our schools, and our government are filled with corruption and lies that cause us poverty, shame, and death. Obedience to God’s Ten Commandments will not earn us heaven, but they will make us better people, which is why they used to be taught in our schools and valued by our society so that we could live together in greater harmony and health morally and relationally. God now equips His people, all those who have humbled themselves before Him confessing their remorse at rebelling against God and now seeking Him to Lord over their lives through Jesus the Savior, these He has given His Holy Spirit, His very presence, for helping us to obey not only the letter of these commands but the spirit behind them. The mission of the Christian is the Great Commission, which teaches obedience to all Jesus’ commands. The Ten Commandments, in spirit and letter, are a great place for Christians to begin obeying Jesus in their homes and in the marketplace, and they are a great way to commemorate Cinco De Mayo.
