Gaining Wisdom

Proverbs 1:7 instructs how a man becomes wise? The first step is to trust and reverence the Lord!image

Everyone wants wisdom. At least everyone wants to make the right decisions! There is a difference.

We make hundreds of decisions daily but the big ones cause us anxiety because failure to get it right can lead to serious financial loss and personal unhappiness. The root desire for wanting wisdom in this instance is selfish; we want to be happy, we want to be successful and we don’t want pain or suffering.

This is not why God gives wisdom.

The first step toward gaining wisdom is to trust and reverence the Lord.

Wisdom is given so we might know God and how to please Him in everything we do. We were created by God for God so our first objective must be His honor, glory and pleasure upon the earth through our work and worship. If we really want wisdom we must begin pursuing God diligently, daily.

This means opening up His instruction manual, the Bible, and reading it, asking Him to show us His will for our lives. We further our understanding of Him by reading, listening and meeting with others who are also on the journey to knowing God and obeying His commands.

The second part of having wisdom is trusting God. Trust by definition means I don’t know the future but I know the character of the one with whom I am entering that future.

Thus wisdom will not give us all the answers to all of our questions because then we wouldn’t need to trust God at all.

In marriage we walk to the alter trusting that the other person will be faithful to us and we to them until death do us part. Our love is the basis for our trust. When the love grows cold, trust is diminished often times leading to unfaithfulness.

We wont be faithful to God if we don’t trust Him and we wont have much trust unless we have greater love for Him which is developed through our relationship with Him. This relationship is fostered in the Bible then by prayer as His Spirit increasingly engages our spirit engendering increasingly greater love and trust for God.

Wisdom is had through an ever deepening personal relationship with God through Jesus Christ resulting in our lives increasingly bringing greater glory to God through their honor and obedience to Him.
