(Mat) 15:3-9 CJB “He answered, “Indeed, why do you break the command of God by your tradition? For God said, ‘Honor your father and mother,’ and ‘Anyone who curses his father or mother must be put to death.’ But you say, ‘If anyone says to his father or mother, “I have promised to give to God what I might have used to help you,” then he is rid of his duty to honor his father or mother.’ Thus by your tradition you make null and void the word of God! You hypocrites! Yesha‘yahu was right when he prophesied about you, ‘These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far away from me. Their worship of me is useless, because they teach man-made rules as if they were doctrines.’
Man-made traditions in the church are not harmless—they can actually nullify the Word of God. Jesus confronts this directly when He rebukes the religious leaders for elevating their traditions above God’s commands.
It is possible to appear religious, to speak about God, and yet be far from Him because of misplaced trust in tradition.
Man-Made Traditions in the Church Replace Obedience
Jesus exposes the core problem: man-made traditions in the church often replace obedience to God.
The Pharisees created systems that benefited them while leading people away from honoring God. Their traditions gave the appearance of righteousness but produced disobedience.
This same danger exists today.
When traditions are elevated to the level of doctrine, they can:
- Give false assurance
- Minimize the necessity of repentance
- Replace a life of obedience with ritual participation
The result is a people who believe they are right with God while living far from Him.
When Tradition Becomes a Substitute for Salvation
One of the clearest modern examples is when a religious act is treated as the basis of salvation rather than a response to it.
What may have begun as a recognition of God’s covenant faithfulness can become a misplaced source of confidence. People begin to trust in what was done to them rather than in a transformed life lived for Christ.
But Scripture consistently teaches:
- Salvation produces obedience
- Faith results in a changed life
- Love for God is demonstrated through obedience
It is far easier to trust in a past religious experience than to live a present life of daily repentance, cross-bearing, and obedience to Jesus.
The Spiritual Danger of Man-Made Traditions in the Church
Where man-made traditions in the church dominate, the spiritual effects are devastating.
People may:
- Neglect gathering with believers
- Ignore God’s commands in daily life
- Avoid the call to make disciples
- Live without evidence of transformation
Jesus calls this kind of worship useless—because it is disconnected from obedience.
In these environments, the gospel struggles to take root because people believe they already possess what they have never truly received.
God’s Standard Does Not Change
God’s ways are not shaped by human tradition. He will not judge us by what we preferred or what our culture accepted, but by His revealed Word.
We are accountable to:
- Know His commands
- Obey His commands
- Orient our lives around His will
Jesus makes it clear: lip service is not enough. True worship flows from hearts that are aligned with God through obedience.
Run Today’s Play:
Identify any tradition, belief, or past experience you are relying on instead of present obedience to God.
Examine your life honestly—are you trusting in tradition or walking in obedience?
Repent where you have substituted ritual for relationship.
Commit to obeying what God commands in His Word—without compromise.
Take one step today to live out your faith through action, not assumption.
Because in the end:
Man-made traditions in the church cannot save you.
Only a life transformed by Jesus—proven through obedience—reveals that you truly know Him.
