The Church Is Built on the Confession of Jesus: Why Knowing Who He Is Changes Everything

(Mat) 16:16, 18-19, 23 CJB “Shim‘on Kefa answered, “You are the Mashiach, the Son of the living God.” I also tell you this: you are Kefa,” [which means ‘Rock,’] “and on this rock I will build my Community, and the gates of Sh’ol will not overcome it. I will give you the keys of the Kingdom of Heaven. Whatever you prohibit on earth will be prohibited in heaven, and whatever you permit on earth will be permitted in heaven.” But Yeshua turned his back on Kefa, saying, “Get behind me, Satan! You are an obstacle in my path, because your thinking is from a human perspective, not from God’s perspective!”

The Church is built on the confession of Jesus. This is the foundation of everything Jesus establishes in Matthew 16. When Peter declares, “You are the Mashiach, the Son of the living God,” Jesus responds that on this rock He will build His Community.

This confession is not merely intellectual—it is transformational. It is the recognition of Jesus as Savior, Lord, and God, expressed through repentance, obedience, and witness.

The Church Is Built on the Confession of Jesus, Not Human Perspective

Jesus immediately reveals the tension every disciple faces. After affirming Peter’s confession, He later rebukes him:

“Get behind me, Satan!… your thinking is from a human perspective, not from God’s perspective!” (Matthew 16:23 CJB)

The same man who spoke truth became an obstacle when he shifted from God’s perspective to man’s.

This is the warning:

The Church is built on the confession of Jesus, but it is sustained only when we continue to think and live according to God’s perspective—not man’s.

Whenever we prioritize:

  • approval from people
  • comfort over sacrifice
  • cultural acceptance over obedience

We move from being participants in God’s work to becoming hindrances to it.

A People Formed by Denial, Cross-Bearing, and Obedience

The people of God are not defined by attendance or affiliation, but by allegiance.

Jesus calls His followers to:

  • deny themselves
  • take up their cross
  • follow Him

This is how the confession of Jesus becomes visible.

It is not enough to say who Jesus is. The Church is built on the confession of Jesus lived out in daily obedience.

The Mission: Storming the Gates of Hell

Jesus declares:

“The gates of Sh’ol will not overcome it.” (Matthew 16:18)

The Church is not defensive—it is advancing.

The mission is clear:

  • proclaim the gospel
  • release people from spiritual bondage
  • bring sight to the blind
  • open ears to hear God’s Word
  • see lives healed from sin and death

This is how Jesus lived—overcoming evil by doing the Father’s will on earth as it is in heaven.

And this is the mission He gives His people.

Authority Belongs to the Obedient Church

Jesus says He gives the keys of the Kingdom to His people.

But this authority is not given to a passive or compromised Church.

It belongs to those who:

  • know who Jesus is
  • submit to His Word
  • live in obedience to His commands

The Church is true and faithful when it proclaims Jesus for who He truly is and aligns itself with His mission—the Great Commission of reconciling the world to God.

God’s Perspective Changes Everything

God’s perspective is clear:

He alone is Sovereign.
Every knee will bow.
Every tongue will confess that Jesus is Lord.

Yet this same King is gentle and humble, inviting us into a life where His burden is easy and His load is light.

To know Him rightly is to live for Him fully.

Do you merely say who Jesus is, or are you living under His authority?

Run Today’s Play:

Confess Jesus clearly as Lord—Savior, King, and God.
Examine where your thinking has drifted to a human perspective.
Repent of any place where you are prioritizing people over God.
Take one concrete step of obedience today that aligns with His mission.

Because in the end:

The Church is built on the confession of Jesus.
And that confession is proven by a life that follows Him.
