John 4.36 promises the one who reaps draws a wage and harvests a crop for eternal life.
God warned us, while living among us, as one of us, not too place our life pursuit upon things that didn’t last like houses, clothes and money. God might have added cars to this mix had they been invented while He lived among us.
These are the very things most of us pursue for defining our success and significance in the world. God is not opposed to working for reward.
After telling us what not to base our life pursuits upon He tells us to store up for ourselves treasure in heaven where moth and rust do not destroy. The issue isn’t working for reward, the issue is what reward we are working for!
How do we earn eternal treasure? God says those who participate in His work of winning people to His point-of-view, draw a wage that will pay eternal dividends.
If we want to earn eternal dollars we must work for eternal ends. If we want to earn temporal dollars we will work for temporal ends.
Too many are working too hard for dollars that benefit them only as long as they live in this world. Too few are working too hard with too many watching at the work that pays forever once we pass from this life to the next.
God promises those who work for His business will have their needs met in this life. Those who work for their own ends never seem to have enough and will have nothing in the life to come.
If we want eternal reward, if we want riches in heaven, we must begin earning heavenly wages today and to do that we must be fully engaged in helping people know Jesus as Savior of the world.
